I suppose this is the tiny bit of Alaskan in me talking
Last night I was reminded that it was, in fact, the longest day of the year. My first thought?
It's all downhill from here.
Because I hadn't been fully aware that it was, in fact, summer solstice, I forgot to plan any pagan rituals or Naked Moonlight Forest Glade Dancing. Which is a shame.
I did, though, go to a famous local spot for lunch, which must count for something. It's called Hamilton's and is Logan's fancy restaurant.
We splurged on the double stuffed potato spring rolls (Official description: Creamy mashed potatoes with a touch of green onion, bacon, and melted cheddar cheese. All rolled in a crispy Asian wrapper, served with sour cream.) It was like a fancy heart attack on a plate.
Spitfire got the
I had the best Wedge Salad ever.
And then the Potato-Rosemary Crusted Halibut (Official description: grated potato and rosemary crusted halibut filet grilled and topped with a citrus butter compound.)
Note: I couldn't actually taste the citrus butter. But those sweet potatoes were the best I've ever had. I'd like to bathe in a vat of those things, I think.
So. Without realizing it, I did find a way to celebrate and it did not involve nudity. I'm sure the staff at Hamilton's are grateful for this.
Maybe on sushi night.

I love summer solstice. And that food you ate.
I've never understood the appeal of wedge salads. Doesn't it get kind of messy, having to cut that lettuce up by yourself? Or am I just lazy? Plus, iceberg is the least flavorful lettuce. So...why so yummy? Not that I'm questioning your taste buds or anything, just wondering if I should give it a shot next time one is offered.
My brother (a chef) makes an excellent grilled salad. Yep you grill the lettuce. I would recommend it to anyone with an adventurous streak.
I loved it too, Jen.
Lilcis, you make true points. Iceberg shouldn't even count as food as it's pretty much just water. What I find appealing about the wedge is the intense flavor of the blue cheese & bacon combined with the crunch of the iceberg. I'd say give it a go once if you like(especially if it's at a good restaurant where it will be done well). But there's nothing healthy about this salad. -)
Anon, I would absolutely try that. Any chance you could get me a recipe or some pointers?
You take really good food pictures, which is impressive, because most of the time, food pictures look like crap. Anyway. Maybe you should consider being a food critic? I would accompany you to any restaurant you like...
I love that you take pictures of the food you eat. It makes me laugh every time. That's all.
I'm at work, with no food left and now I want to either bolt for the nearest restaurant or simply drool to death on my keyboard. Tasty pictures!
The crunchy, watery lettuce and blue cheese taste fabulous together. Don't know why, because I am not an advocate of iceberg normally.
A steakhouse that has a delicious-looking Italian-inspired sandwich? Huh?? Although I haven't liked the aioli I've tried—too eggy for my taste.
OK, I know that restaurant has to be top-notch, because I don't often pay attention to a restaurant's salads, but that wedge-salad had my mouth watering. If I head west, I'll put that place on my must-try list.
I didn't even realize we were on the downward slope until I read your blog. Depressing. Although less depressing for you, because you've somehow escaped Alaskan winters. Okay, not that Logan's are much better.
Not that this is related, but I thought you'd find this article interesting. You may have to sign in, but registration is free. Enjoy!

It's like backwards deja vu...we just had our shortest day of the year and I thought, 'it's all up from here!' :) As it's currently almost dark when I leave work at 5pm, those longer days can't come soon enough.
I LOVE sweet potatoes. They are one of the best foods ever. They were one of my pregnancy foods, along with green olives. I still crave them though. I guess it is the lovely combinations of sweet and orange mush.
