why it is important to dress up for a wedding

I just sent Jen & crew on their way back home and now I'm trying to decide which is more important before work--more sleep or a shower. Aaaaand apparently I'm choosing blogging, which just shows how committed I am to all of you. Or something.

Yesterday's wedding was lovely. I wore high-heeled shoes and spent the duration of the outdoor reception sinking backwards into the lawn. Later I wondered why I'd been so silly as to wear high-heeled shoes, only here's the thing: I don't go to these kinds of weddings looking to meet guys, because I know that's not going to happen. I do know, however, that I'm going to run into people I haven't seen in years--including old Young Women leaders, boys younger than me who are now married with three children, and girls I used to babysit who are now engaged. And we're going to play catch-up and they're going to report back to family and friends about who they saw and what everyone's up to. So it's much better to make the effort and put on the makeup and the smile and wear the shoes and hold my head high. Then people can come away thinking, "Huh, she still seems pretty put together and good-shoes-wearing. I wonder what's wrong with the men these days?"

That, to me, is much better than them coming away thinking, "Well there's a cat lady in the making. Tragic."

Big foot lady = BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And yes, it is good to dress up for that very reason. What is wrong with the men these days?

You even took the time to flatten your hair. Go you--it looks nice.

I dress up for weddings because I think it's appropriate. AND, if you run into people from your past they can make those comments that you referred to.

So, how fun was that to attend a reception for someone who graduated in '06? Man I feel old.

last month i took a trip back to hawai'i where i lived for 5 years. i went to a wedding and could have cried for the beauty of the relaxed atmosphere. shorts, sandals, aloha shirts... against the background of the fruit trees and flowers... it was beautiful. just beautiful.

I was going to make a Bigfoot comment, but just noticed you put that in the caption. Drat!

I'm glad you think I'm funny, Cicada. And Tusk, go you for picking up on it too! Great minds, great minds.

Thank, Kristen. That's the cut from last week. My roommate has a Chi flat-iron which is the ONLY reason I'm attempting to even try for straight.

Iggy, I would love to have a wedding in Hawai'i. Or just go to one. Either way, I'm there.

That Bigfoot pic is hilarious!!

uI hope, in the spirit of unlikely coincidences, that Lady Walking in Manner of Bigfoot is randomly a reader of your blog. Because that would really be funny.

My friend, who thinks he's funny, makes a point of trying to get in the background of people's photographs at occasions like this. Usually he goes for the goony smile, lately he's taken to holding my children up in the background. I'll have to tell him to add "Bigfoot Stalk" to his repertoire.

It looks like you took the picture while I was still chewing my ice cream cone. Thanks for that.

I was going to post a comment that I thought would be so nice, but then I was afraid you'd hunt me down and slap me to death.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Jimmy, if the comment was nice then why would I slap you?

Carina said... [reply]

That's also why I dress for the grocery store and why I put on lipstick before going into any public place. If you don't put any on you'll run into all kinds of people you don't want to talk to.

April said... [reply]

Nemesis, his nice comment may have been, "Aw, you look like my mother!" And then that would be why you'd want to slap him, because women in their 20s don't want to look like people's mothers.

I'll give it a shot...
There are different kinds of beauty, and each has its own class of people who appreciate it.

The Paris Hilton/Heidi Klum beauty is purely a physical thing. Men want to be with them simply because all the parts work for the eye.The approach there is pretty much the same way men approach amazing cars.

The Hilary Swank/Kate Winslet/Emmy Rossum beauty is a combination of physical appeal, and intellectual attractiveness. Men who win the hearts of women such as these have to see the mind as well as the body. The approach there is one of actually having to think. These men move more slowly because they build friendships and respect first, getting to actually know the woman. The kind of man who appreciates this kind of beauty is more careful, more refined, and typically a little less aggressive. Therefore, it's not the "love at first sight" type of situation. So it can usually take longer to happen.

Unfortunately, given the way of the world these days, it seems too many men don't think with their brains, so it can appear that the ones who appreciate the second type just aren't out there. But they are, I guarantee it. Most of the women I know from my own life who fit the second description hung in there and wound up very loved and very happy.

I see you in that second category. The pictures in your blog show a very attractive woman, but it's the words, the humor, the intelligence in your writing that make your beauty complete. I think you're too smart and too classy for the kind of man who is interested purely in the physical so you don't fall into that trap. The men who deserve you just haven't gotten through yet.

And to show that I'm not trying to be Shakespeare here, I'll close out in normal English: true "hotness" isn't measured in physical traits, it's a state of mind that only good men can see and appreciate.

K? :)

Do you have any more pictures of the reception? Such as the cake, the bride, the decorations, etc? I don't know what's wrong me, I already had my wedding but I STILL obsess with what other people do for theirs. I LOVE WEDDINGS!

If I had planned better for my life I would have become a wedding planner. I still might . . . as soon as I finish my MBA I'm going to go for a certificate in event planning. And then when I win the lottery I can pursue my dream career.

Of course, that may require actually buying a lottery ticket at some point...

Too much info, I know. Who's blog is this?

Nemesis said... [reply]

Now Jimmy, that wasn't slapworthy at all! If I read it right it involved you comparing me to Kate Winslet, which, hi, is no shabby compliment. Also you've given me things to think over, so thanks.

Lilcis, please don't get mad, but these pics were all I managed. Everything was really lovely--the bride's mom made her dress and the bridesmaid dressed AND the cake. The colors were chocolate brown and shades of pink & coral. The cake was two-tiered with white frosting and brown ribbon (look behind the little bridesmaid and you can see what was left of it). Next wedding I go to I'll do better! :-)

"The pictures in your blog show a very attractive woman, but it's the words, the humor, the intelligence in your writing that make your beauty complete."

I can't put it better. At the risk of sounding like I have a girlie crush (I don't), I often wonder what is wrong with the guys you know/meet, because you've got the whole package, and yet somehow there still seems to be a dearth of posts saying things like, 'man, I wish I could get a breather from all these guys pestering me to go out'. Inconceivable.

So agree on dressing up for weddings, and for the same reasons. Also it's not safe to go 'cat lady' to any event where so many photos are taken. It'd be like creating evidence.

chosha said... [reply]

And I know you weren't fishing for compliments, but that doesn't mean you shouldnt get one sometimes. :)

Nemesis said... [reply]

Wow, I wasn't expecting the rush of compliments but thank you very much for them just the same! When I looked at that picture of me all I could think was, "Dude, I know I had eyebrows when I left the house. What is up with that??"

And Chosha, I should make a small confession here, perhaps. There have been a couple of really nice, good, quality guys in the picture over the past few months. And even though things didn't work out, I still felt very flattered and encouraged to know that there are good guys out there who are making an effort. I didn't bring it up because they read this blog, and I would have felt like a jerk to be overly bemoaning my single state under the circumstances (I was the one who didn't feel right about continuing to date). So yeah. That's my story.

Good. It's nice to know they're not all completely insane. :)
