If you're a Cache-er and you know it . . .

So Desmama and I are having words about autumn foods. I have discovered what is a new to me food combination. It's not a bad combination at all, mind you, it's just two things that I never consciously paired together.

Desmama mentioned it first, and I thought this was maybe just something she liked or grew up with. But when the same combination was brought up by several other local people I decided that this must be a Cache Valley thing. She, however, thinks I'm on crack and that everyone knows and loves this seasonal treat. I told her that I would take it to the Internet and see if it's a regional thing or not.

So. Let's do this. In the interest of science, please tell me where you're from and what you think of as the quintessential sweet treat to be enjoyed on a cozy autumn evening. And if you got this idea from anyone with ties to Cache Valley or Utah, please mention that as well. Anonymous entries are welcome!

I grew up in Texas, and now I live in Happy Valley. It's all about the hot drinks (wassail and hot chocolate). I have a fall birthday, and for my 21st birthday I had a "Hot Drinks Party."

Also, I think of pumpkin pie, chili and soups. All fall foods, though I will eat them any time.

Caramel apples, or really anything with those divine fall apples. Spudnuts are nice too. Provo in the house.

Dude, WHAT are you talking about? Will you kindly tell us what this magical Cache combination consists of?

Pumpkin anything and apple cider.

Viva Mexico!

Apple and pumpkin anything. Hot apple cider, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. There's a good reason why Autumn is my favorite season.

I have also recently become acquainted with the joy that is butternut squash.

Grew up in Tucson, now live in New England, have spent a total of 2 days in Utah in my whole life.

I don't know about anything quintessential, but I love anything with apples and pumpkins. Fruit galettes are good. I'm from the East Coast.

cheese with cider.
homemade ice cream with homemade root beer.
apple pie a la mode.
pumpkin bread with wassail.
boiled apples and cinnamon with oatmeal.
cranberry sauce with brie.
pecan pie with hazelnut steamers.
fruit tarts with honey butter.
candied yams with marshmallows.

hmm, an odd combination? i always thought it was weird when people hung deep fried donuts from strings and tried to catch them in their mouths. fingers work much better even though they get sticky.

Texas/Utah

Apple Pie, Wassail

I couldn't think of anything, until the candied yams with marshmallows comment. Mmmmm! I didn't grow up in Utah, but both of my parents did.

Definitely hot chocolate, cinnamon rolls and pumpkin bars.

Southern Cal, hey it dips below 55 ... sometimes.

I'm getting really hungry. I too would have to go for hot chocolate and some kind of sweet bread--zucchini or pumpkin. The only quintessential Northern Utah food I can think of is fry sauce. And hey, that is awesome ANY time of year. I think you should actually do a scientific survey with an official blogger poll so there are some choices.

Anything warm and gooey. Like cinnamon rolls or apple crisp or cobbler. Or pumpkin bread. mmmmm. And hot chocolate.

For an autumnal treat, hands down: apple pie. But as far as strange food combos go, and I've never tried this myself, only heard about it...apple pie with cheese. Like cheddar cheese. Which seems weird to me, but when you think about how good a slice of cheddar tastes with fresh apples, you start to wonder about it with your pie...

oh and I'm from Seattle. We love our apples.

pumpkin pie or apple crisp

Lady Steed said... [reply]

whoops, I'm from California, the Bay Area. I'd also like to include wassail/cider type drinks.

yola: I too have heard about the apple pie and cheese combination. Most recently I read about it in an issue of Martha Stewart Living. So if this happens to be the magical Cache Valley combo, then I would have to say that it is not unique to that area.

Apple pie and cheese aren't unique to CV. My dad served a mission in Hawai'i and a lady there claimed that apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze. So. There you have it.

And that's not the secret combo I'm looking for. It hasn't appeared yet. Wretched poll.

In Australia it is apple pie with heavy cream, unwhipped. Divine.Any hints, Desmama?

I'm from SLC and I GAGGED when I found out my grandpa (from OK) and my brother (also from SLC) like to eat apple pie with a fat hunk of cheddar cheese. **dry heave**

Desmama - My mom claims the same thing! I think the combo just sounds disgusting. My husband likes mozzarella cheese with his pears, though, so maybe there is something to this fruit-with-cheese thing...

I'm from the mid-Atlantic so my fall delights are pretty standard. Apple cider, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin butter, apple pie made with pick your own apples, and donuts and hot chocolate from Dunkin Donuts.

hot cocoa, hot cider, apple crisp, apple cobbler, caramel apples, sweet breads (as in pumpkin, etc), cinnamon rolls, homemade donuts or scones are pretty great in the fall too.

coming to you by way of a nomadic upbringing: Idaho-West Texas-Massachusetts-Connecticut-
now in Provo.

Now I'm dying to know the Cache Valley confection of which you speak...

-Carameled apples
-Chex Mix (a must on Halloween)
-Homemade Rootbeer in a witch's cauldron

Grew up in Salt Lake, went to school in Logan.

P.S. I'm Sarah. All my friends read your blog and I've started to as well. So addicting!

I was under the impression that apple pie (cold!) and cheddar cheese was a Canadian thing... anyway, I definitely do that.

As for the secret combo (which I know of now because I'm posting late on this) I don't like donuts. So... I'm not so much into this combination. Can you give me another cultural experience?

Texas. And apple crisp. Ummm.

I can't think of a single thing we particularly eat in Autumn in Australia. Except maybe that it's Easter time, so hot cross buns.

It's turkey and sauerkraut, isn't it? Totally a Providence thing and not a Cache Valley thing.

In New Mexico, we enjoyed roasted green chile and cornbread stuffing.

I also thought of pumpkin/chocolate chip cookies, which are a tasty seasonal treat but not really that strange. BTW, apple pie and cheddar cheese is a wonderful combination and highly recommended.

Pie and Cheese - has no one read James Herriot? Ed - I've got to ask, how do you make pumpkin bars - they sound delicious. Yeah for anything pumpkin!
