I'm going to have to change my angle a little bit

Gentleman Friend and I got engaged. We're getting married in August, which is approximately 6 years from now. (I've become acquainted with Engagement Days, which I think must be similar to Dog Years. Or geological ages.)

So yeah, I'm probably not allowed to tout myself as a bitter spinster anymore. Unless, of course, he leaves me at the altar. At which point it'll be ON, friends. I'm going to cross fingers it doesn't come to that though, phenomenal traffic jumps notwithstanding. I'll have to settle for being a non-Smug Married with an invested interest in Singleton Affairs. And I'll run around smiling coyly and saying things like, "Marriage is just a better way to live" to my single friends. Who will then very rightly shoot me in the face and throw my body off an overpass.

Everything is going swimmingly so far. I am happy and sane and excited. I have a dress, a temple date, and a luncheon venue. My ring is being made (we're redesigning an anniversary band that was my grandmother's). We're not doing a reception, so that's one (or 86) less things to plan. I also have the kick-@$$iest Google Docs planning spreadsheet ever. I could make out with that spreadsheet. I really could.

The dear friends and family who found out first managed to not out me on my blog (much). So thanks to all of you. People have come out of the woodwork offering to help in all manner of ways. All of Gentleman Friend's immense pioneer-stock L**** family has welcomed me very, very generously. I think I liked his grandmother's response best: "You know, there were days when I was so mad at you! I knew 18 months ago you were supposed to get married! So I'm glad it finally worked out like I'd planned."

I also have THIS, which we took just for you. See how dumb this looks, everyone? I hope this will help us all to make better choices. And a better world.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Smart girl. I hate long dating periods. When you've had enough icky experiences you just know. You know? For circumstances mostly beyond our control, I had to be engaged for six months. Which was pretty much awful. Details. Details.

PS I love blogroll because I keep getting here first. :)

PS Will there be engagement pictures in matching overalls? What about a poem in the Herald Journal? You don't have to completely change your angle. Prepping for a wedding has got to be blog-fodder.

soo when you hadn't posted for a day, and made a comment about a post coming, and how it was going to be a good one, I automatically thought, holy crap she's engaged. I was right. A million congrats to you. I am just too too happy for you, considering we've never met. Best of luck planning a very'non typical-utah' wedding. I am sure you'll pull through like a champ!

Awesome picture.

Does GF want to make out with the spreadsheet too? How does he feel about your making out with inanimate objects?

Congratulations!

Heidi said... [reply]

Awesome piggy back picture post. I was hoping that would make a comeback.

I kid.

jeri said... [reply]

YAY, I'm so excited for you! And your picture isn't too goofy. Which just means you're both adorable.

However to be serious for a moment, Congratulations, we were all glad to see one of the US male YSA finally woke up.

I've been following your lovely blog for a while now and I love it. I also love that you are now getting married! YAY!!I almost did a happy dance, but then I realized I was at work, my boss would ask me what I was doing, and I would have to explain that someone I don't know is getting married and I'm happy for her. SO....I didn't. But the dance was there in my heart. ;)

Jenny said... [reply]

Ok so I am kindof sad about the lack of an incredibly stupid poem. I really had my heart set on one....

AmandaStretch said... [reply]

Oh hooray! Congratulations!!

I was pondering last week, when I realized that the majority of female LIS faculty at school is old, fat, and single, that such may be my fate. And then I was prescribed reading glasses today (at 24!!) and that pretty much sealed the deal.

But this gives me hope! YAY!! (And I join the ranks of people who feel a little silly because I don't know you personally. :) )

As a lurker who has enjoyed reading your blog for quite some time now--I had to de-lurk to say congratulations!!

I'll miss the single girl snarkiness, but know that you won't disappoint with some awesome observations about married life.

CONGRATS again!

Congratulations! I commend you on choosing to do without a reception. I wish Brinestone and I had done the same (though I don't think she shares my opinion).

PS: I love the picture. Nothing says classy wedding announcement like a piggyback picture.

Lindsay said... [reply]

Hey, congratulations! This is fantastic news!

Claire said... [reply]

Happiness and joy your way. That is so awesome. Librarians rule! My entire maternal side of the family live in L----. One aunt collects weird/strange/crazy wedding announcements and pictures from the newspaper and people she knows. Lets hope yours is not among them. That initial picture is ominous however (despite that, you two look fab together).

Hannah said... [reply]

yay!! You actually look quite beautiful in that picture.

I recently too made the jump from spinsterhood to couplehood. However, I still find myself thinking like a single gal. I am kind of bummed that I can no longer blog about graying ovaries, and general spinsterhood (and honestly, I will _really_ miss those posts of yours). The change makes me a bit sad and nostalgic.

CONGRATULATIONS! I am very excited for you. I think the picture is fabulous! ;)

Carina said... [reply]

Congratulations! I found you a cake topper.

anne said... [reply]

Just had to say many, many congratulations!! Fantastic news.

Unknown said... [reply]

I have been reading for quite a while, but I don't think I have ever commented. I just have to drop a line though and say I am so happy for you!! Best wishes, and I can't wait to see your snarky take on marriage.

All the best - Amy

Ann-Marie said... [reply]

That's so exciting! Congrats!!

Debbie Barr said... [reply]

I've been reading your blog for awhile now, and I -occasionally- leave comments, but I figure I might as well say congratulations with the rest of the lurkers. :) Way to go!

Melanie said... [reply]

Is that a Men's Chorus jacket? Because the picture would be even better if it was.

Congratulations! Any chance you can transmit come of your luck--or maybe it's skill--through the internet?

Janssen said... [reply]

Hooray!!!! :)

Congratulations~

lilcis said... [reply]

WAAAAHHHOOOO!!! I can't believe how late I am to reading this post! Stupid work distractions!

Congratulations! I'm so excited for you!

Nemesis said... [reply]

STM, you are speedyquick indeed. Thanks!

Anon, you are smart one. And thank you too! I'll do my best. :-)

Lady Steed, GF might not feel as strongly about the spreadsheet as I do. And that's okay.

Heidi, please don't tell people I'm trying to bring the piggyback pose back in. I would be mortified!

Aw, thanks Jeri.

Saxon, where do you even find shotguns in the UK?

Alishka, thank you very much. I am imagining your dance and it makes me happy. :-)

Jen, no worries. There will be poems.

Amandastretch, could you get SEXY reading glasses? Because then you could be pretty much every guy's fantasy.

Dietcokegrrl, thank you for delurking today! I'll try not to disappoint.

Saxon said... [reply]

umm, (embracing a sterotype here)farmers??

Failing that I'm pretty sure I can get my hands on a water pistol. :-)

Nemesis said... [reply]

Jon Boy, yeah, I'm pretty excited about the lack of reception. And to my very great relief, GF's family was thrilled about it too.

Thanks, Lindsay!

Claire, my dream is to be featured in connection with a vomit-inducing wedding announcement. You know that.

Thanks, Hannah. I can't wait until the REAL photos are ready to launch!

Lady Susan, we'll have to help each other out with this transition, I think. And congratulations to you!!

Azucar, that is my new favorite thing ever. If they're out of stock I'll just recreate it using live models, how's that?

Anne, thank you very much!

Amy, thanks for delurking! Will do my best to deliver the snark as a Smug Married.

Ann-Marie, thank you! And thank you for being so nice about me having to bail on what would have been a most excellent Cedar City trip with you and MBC. You ladies are very forbearing.

Thanks, Nerd Goddess. You know I always love your comments.

Melanie, it's not. Sorry. It's an Old Navy jacket. And I'll do my best to send the luck your way. (There is no way on this Earth I could call it skill. Ever. This thing happened in SPITE of my best efforts to derail it, I promise you.)

Hee. Thanks, Janssen!

Lilcis, this post has only been up for about 30 minutes. You're doing pretty well, I think!

I already have some pretty sexy ones (when I'm not wearing contacts), and a calendar appearance to boot.

It's just the very idea of wearing reading glasses in addition to my contacts that has me freaked out.

FoxyJ said... [reply]

Congrats! No you can move on to married snarkiness, and some day (in the far future--no pressure), mommy snarkiness. I think your announcements should somehow use the Dewey Decimal system.

Lesley-Ann said... [reply]

CONGRATULATIONS you look very happy, we are excited to see the photos and hear all about it.

Desmama said... [reply]

And to think I was thisclose to giving you a picture in your wedding dress you could post. Then you had to get all huffy on me.

Okay, so I still feel dumb.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Desmama, shut up! You were MVP that day, and when I post the Dress Shopping story everyone will realize that. I WILL be telling them that you tried to put pictures of me in my underwear on the Internet, though. Because that's priceless.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hurrah hurrah!

(I don't normally post cos my pocketpc blog reader doesn't support it an pocket IE is absolutely kack and can't manage it)

Maybe you remember me as the balding guy with great ship-loads of children who'd invade the nursery while visit Loughborough ward from time to time (visiting Saxon and Tapdancer).

Anyway, hurrah hurrah; and we need an address to send gifts, it can be a PO box if you like.

I plan on sending you a book, but if you don't post a shipping address I'll have to post the project-gutenberg link instead.

Congrats again! I'm so happy for you. Love the picture you posted too, btw. Does this mean we need to go celebrate by eating lots of tapenade? :)

CONGRATULATIONS! Time to update your profile page! Can't wait to hear the wedding dress story!

Naomi said... [reply]

Having just gone wedding dress shopping with a friend who is getting married in September, I can only imagine your story. Oh, the horror!

Congrats!

G said... [reply]

Congrats! I'm happy for you. Not that you really know who I am, and therefore why would you care if I'm happy? But, nonetheless, I am.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Amandastretch, I didn't realize you wore contacts as well. That would be slightly stressing. Also? Hel-LOOO Miss November!

Foxyj, that's a fabulous idea. Must find a way to incorporate 306.8 in there somehow . . .

Thanks, Lesley-Ann, and thanks for your sweet email! Will write a full reply soon. :-) Say hi to Steve and Beth and your lovely farm for me.

Machinus, I DO remember you and all our fun times together in the nursery. How's it going? You have inspired me to think seriously about the PO box thing. As soon as I get something set up I'll post it.

Emandtrev, you know I always think it's about time for some olive tapenade. I was actually looking at holding the wedding luncheon in that place but it didn't work out. Sigh.

Thank you, Anonymous! The dress story is short but good. Will share it soon!

Thanks, Mona! And I hope I didn't put Desmama through anything toooo bad. But who knows? She could be home sucking her thumb and wailing right now . . .

Gretchen, of course I care that you're happy for me. I think it's lovely that you are! So thank you very much.

Anonymous said... [reply]

But... without a reception how will you send out invitations telling everyone which stores have you in their gift registries?

Congrats again.

Scully said... [reply]

I'm a bit late to the game, but Congratulations! Will we now be addressing you as Ms. or Mrs. Nemesis?

skye said... [reply]

Yeah! At first I thought you were just kidding, but once I realized you were serious, I screamed a little. :) Congrats!! And good luck on all the planning!

Rynell said... [reply]

I giggled at the piggy back photo. You do look blissfully happy and therefore, I am blissfully happy for you both.

Marie said... [reply]

I really enjoy your blog, and the other de-lurkers gave me the courage to temporarily de-lurk and say congratulations!! Best wishes to the both of you!!

Is that the SLC Library in the back? Ideal for wedding picture goodness? I think the LC system would be more fun on an invite.

Wedding dress shopping is a beast. Try doing it online like my roommate did. Ick!

My worst wedding dress story I have consisted of a friend who invited me to drive her to her fitting because she thought it would be fun for me. I couldn't think of something more boring for a single person. The shopping part can be fun, the fitting can be a yawn.

And that is one darling picture! If only you were wearing the Hot Dog On A Stick uniform...

You have no idea (or maybe you do) how warm and fuzzy I feel watching a man decide that the love of his life is a smart, educated, strongly-opinioned woman. He seemed nice before, but now he rocks! :) Seriously though, I'm so, so happy for you. Enjoy everything. Congratulations to both of you.

Oh, and register here: http://www.badgiftemporium.com/ hahahaha

Congrats!!! I'm so excited for you and wish you all the best. Funny story - my sister was telling me about this fabulously funny blogger, Ms. Nemesis who went across the Pond to get a library of science degree. No way, I said - that sounds like a girl that used to be in my ward...low and behold, it is you!!! Love the blog - you're awesome.

So happy for you! Congratulations! We want details!!

Nemesis said... [reply]

Before, how you make me chortle.

Thank you, Scully! I think Miss Nemesis will be fine to stick with--it's my professional name, after all. ;-)

Skye, thanks so much! I'm glad I could make someone scream.

Rynell, thank you. My mother has decided that's her favorite picture. She wants me to get it framed for her, only I think I would rather be tied to a red-ant hill.

Thanks so much, adventures in blogging!

And hooray to you, Hass!

Abby, that is indeed the SLC library in the background. It was an easy spot to meet up with my b-in-law (and photographer) Ed and we thought it was sort of fitting. And SPEAKING of fittings, my first one is next Friday. Am trying to decide which single friends to invite along.

Natalie, he is indeed a man of information. He read the agricultural reports and I recommended that he read The Romance of the Forest and he said that he would.

Midcitygal, thanks for the vote of confidence!

Kimberlykv, I'm a little sad about the reclassification. But I understand that such things must be. Thank you!

NF, thanks so much!

Debs, no worries, I'll get all the details up for you! xxx

Chosha, thanks for introducing me to my new favorite website. I think I want the bears.

Buffy, hi! It's great to hear from you--am heading over right now to check out your blog and see what you're up to.

Nemesis said... [reply]

T&J&V, thanks. Glad you approve. :-)

Charm (Erica), that's too funny. You'll have to thank your sister for getting us back in touch!

April, thank you so much!

Life in the NHS, it's always a pleasure to have you stop by. :-) I'll do my best to come up with some crazy wedding stories to post!

Becky, indeed. I mean, I hope they DON'T begin, but at least they'll make for good blog fodder, right?

Thanks, Carly!

And I really hope you're planning on posting some of the shmoopy details. Both smug marrieds and bitter singles can appreciate a good love story.
