Weekend Highlights/Lowlights

Highlights:

Got to see GF 5 nights in a row. This does not usually happen, on account of he moved to SLC and I'm in L**** smelling the cows.

Stayed in this lovely place Thursday night with GF's family. There was a hot tub on the balcony.

Because GF works graveyard shifts (as a very busy and important TV news producer, mind you), he left Thursday night and went to work. I spent Friday hanging out with his lovely mother and sisters. We went to IKEA, Target, and Nielsen's Frozen Custard. So, you know, pretty much my perfect day.

Registered for gifts at Target and Bed Bath & Beyond. Am now feeling all kinds of greedy & salivatory at the thought of finally, finally having nice kitchen stuff. Because if you've ever had roommates you'll agree that there's just no point buying good pans when the Evolutionary Throwback known as Your Roommate's Boyfriend will just take a machete to them one night while "helping" in the kitchen.

Went to a baseball game Monday night. I must say that I enjoy movies about baseball more than sitting through actual 12-hour-long games. But I have a cultural and social appreciation of it as America's Pasttime, and it was a very nice way to spend a summer evening. Especially since GF was there. It would have been more boring without him and our ongoing discussion about whether he is allowed to smash cake in my face at the reception. (Answer: He is not.)

Lowlights:

The friend who was doing my wedding flowers just got an interview for grad school in England right during the wedding. England, why must you be this way to me?

One of my roommates got married on Saturday, so all their family was in town. It was her new teenaged b-in-law who was playing around on her scooter on Thursday in the driveway, lost control on the grass, and drove straight into the side of my car. While I was sitting in it.

Was informed by GF's sweet, sweet nephew (who was lying in my lap and gazing up at me adoringly) that I have a beard.

Sounds like a great week!!
I remember telling Jason that he would be sleeping in a different hotel room if any cake was smashed in my face. The threat worked. ;)

So sad for your car...

I thought you weren't having a reception? Also, I'd like to recommend registering at Williams Sonoma as well, for all the crazy expensive but fun items you'd never buy for yourself. I know BB&B has a lot of the same items . . . um, I can think of another reason other than it's cool. And they have great customer service. And their gift wrap is pretty. We just registered online, since we never had time to make it to the store. Also, don't forget when you're done (ie: after the wedding) you get an additional % off anything you decide to buy yourself off your registery. It's different for every store, but make sure you take advantage of that. And BB&B coupons never actually expire, even though they have an expiration date on them. And you can use up to five coupons for one transaction. So start saving up now, so that you'll have plenty to redeem when you use your gift cards. And if you get your china from BB&B, and need to complete the order yourself (ie: you're not gifted every piece) make sure you ask them for a 20% discount and free shipping on the whole order. You'll get it.

Hannah, seriously. So far threats just seem to heighten the impish glee. I'm totally fine with pulling that one out, though.

Lilcis, we're not having a reception, but since my mother AND GF have their heart set on a cake we're having a small one at the luncheon. Jen's going to make it, because she is awesome like that. But we will cancel that in a heartbeat if I have to. Hear that, Mom? It will be GF's fault when you are sad that there is no cake. Remember that.

Okay, there comes a point where that discussion about smashing cake in your face needs to end. Because you need to be able to go the last few weeks in peace knowing that your face is safe from that heinous and not-funny practice.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Daltongirl, you're right. I should just let it go and trust that GF would never deliberately do something that would make me unhappy. The End.

As long as the Highlights outnumber the the low points. Silver lining, if you will.

The cake thing? The separate hotel room threat sounds effective to me.

Another BBB trick, is to bring an LNT coupon. They will totally honor it (my mom taught me that trick). Of course, LNT has filed for bankruptcy so who knows how long that store would last.

Rynell makes a good point. The highlights are very, very good, and I didn't mean to single one thing out. It's just that we had a side conversation going on . . .

But what I was really thinking was not so much about you letting it go, but more along the lines of GF saying to you, "Nem, I will not shove cake in your face." And that would be the end of it. DB did that for me, and it not only increased my esteem of him, but relieved my anxiety greatly. I'm sure GF will take the high road. He has proven himself before, if not in the area of water conservation.

Did you know there are three other girls with your first and last name getting married this year and registered at Bed, Bath, & Beyond? If it weren't for the place and date, I would be v. v. confused. I was already a little confused, seeing as how I expected the registry to say your name and Gentleman Friend. Weird to have a name to put with the face. Oh and I should mention that we actually know each other in real life, in case other commenters I don't know or GF himself thinks I'm some sort of crazy stalker. And one final incoherent thought before I have to race back to work: Yours is one of the most well thought out registries I have seen in a long time. Mostly because all the other soon-to-be-marrieds are under 25 and register for things like computers and $500 massage chairs.

Wait, what's LNT???

Have you forgotten what I taught you? Can you reach his adam's apple with your clinched fist? That ought to do it. Sorry GF, but she is my daughter. I have to protect her.

I know Scully, I was kinda stunned to see all the people with my name. Of course it makes sense that they're in the South, which is the only place where anyone knows how to pronounce my last name.

And thank you for the compliment on my registry! I sort of croon over it like a baby. Some things I haven't registered for because a) I already have them (ramekins and cheese plates), or b) I'm going to use gift cash and get them at Costco and make a KILLING (Kirkland signature pots & pans).

LNT= Linens and Things

It might be an east coast thing.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Thanks, Abby. I'll sign up to have them email me coupons. Mwah hah hahah.

Crate and Barrel! People LOVE buying gifts from Crate and Barrel. Lovely gifts that you would never buy for yourself. I was informed by a couple of different people upon seeing that I didn't have a Crate and Barrel registry, that I really needed to step up and that they would personally buy me things from that registry. I guess Target and BB&B were too gauche for those friends.

Also, if there isn't enough stuff on your C&B registry people will give you C&B gift cards. We've already churned through all the BB&B and Target gift cards, but still have about $300 in C&B.

We fed each other our wedding pie with forks. No smashing. NO SMASHING.

You are right, no cake in the face. I wonder how this "cute" tradition started? Here is this amazingly gorgeous woman whom you have pledged to spend eternity with (and make no mistake, the reception thing is all about the babe in the dress), and you are going to smash cake all over her glowing countenance? Lame. Lame! LAME! It is bad enough to have to scrape oreos off your car at midnight when all you want to do is head to bedded (I mean wedded) bliss without having to scrape Crisco frosting off your face as well. I'm sure that is oh-so-good for the complexion just prior to 8,000 honeymoon pictures.

We were not raised in a barn, so we are not doing the cake smashing thing. And by We I mean He.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Kelly, I do love me some Crate and Barrel, but there are no stores in UT. So that would make it kind of trickier to do unless I just plan to do it all online.

G said... [reply]

Crate and Barrel does have a great website... ;)

Seriously though, it's absence in UT is a huge hit against the state. I'm sorry.

Audra said... [reply]

I hope you get a little cake... not necessarily shoved all over your face, but a little icing on the tip of your nose would be cute! ;)!

Kelly said... [reply]

No Crate and Barrel? I have no words.
