My helpmeet
GH is glorying in the winter citrus season, with its bevy of navel oranges and clementines and tangerines and the resultant lack of scurvy. So yesterday at my lover the Sunflower Farmer's Market, I found something fun and brought it home.
"Check it out, I got us tangelos!"
"Do they have seeds?"
"I don't know. They're a cross between an orange and a tangerine."
"I know that, but do they have seeds?"
"Does it really make a difference?"
"I don't want to bother if they have seeds."
"But you really like oranges, I thought."
"I do. But it's not worth it if I have to deal with seeds."
"You know, it's a good thing you weren't one of our evolutionary ancestors. I can just see you, lounging in a cave somewhere . . . 'Ugh, but I'd have to chase it . . . Meh, I just won't eat.'"
"Actually, I'd given up oranges entirely because of the peeling thing. But then I discovered those peeler tools and bought a really great bag of oranges at Lee's last Christmas. Then I was back on."
Only then he flipped it around later when I didn't want to finish the tangelo because it turns out that the skin around the segments was really thick and tough and hard to chew and reminded me of sunburned peeled bits of human skin.
As if that's even the same thing.

My husband is the same way about grapes - he freaks out if they have seeds. Because yes, it is so hard to lounge on the couch and eat grapes with seeds.
I'm with GH. Seedless is the only way to go. Unless, of course, scurvey is a possibility and citrus with seeds is the only option.
Clementines: good
Scurvy: bad
When is the last time you ate burnt flesh? Or it just LOOKS like that.
Ugh, I saw those tangelos on sale at SFM at well and bought four, excited to try out a new fruit. Bad idea. For something that's supposed to be a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, it tastes nothing like either. Straight into the trash, sadly. But at only $0.88/lb., I think we will live.
I'm siding with GH on this one too. I don't like to even bother with most fruits because they are so complicated to eat. By the time I'm done with an orange, I have sticky hands, I've bitten multiple seeds, I have a pile of peels and stringy white things, and I've ingested about a tablespoon of juice.
Or, I could drink a glass of juice, get even more vitamins and move on with my life a lot quicker.
I love tangelos! Easy to peel, no seeds, sweet like an orange but tangy like a tangerine. They're my favorite! Maybe you got a bad batch.
So, I'm just going to go out on a limb and Guess he wouldn't be into pomegranates. Which really is a shame. My husband has the same issue with oranges. He will eat them if I peel them. Right! He too is intrigued by those peeler thingies. :)
Hey. I found your blog...somehow (blogstalking at work is a new passtime for me). Anyway, I am "inactive" LDS, mostly because I joined when I was 29 and single, which was dumb as I should have waited until I was married due to the crazy YSA ridiculousness that goes on. Anyway, just wanted to say you are a breath of fresh air and make me sort of want to know normal LDS people. Maybe there will be some in my ward someday.
I just swallow the seeds. It's never been a problem. Also, I think seeds might have antioxidant properties. Or maybe that's just grape seeds, but anyway. I just feel around for the seeds in my mouth, separate them from the fruit, swallow them, and then enjoy the rest. Slightly more complicated than eating fruit without seeds, certainly, but the antioxidants balance that out.
i don't think swallowing the seeds is a good idea, and burnt human flesh really isn't that bad if you eat it with a splash of lemon and parsley to garnish.
Not to mention some fava beans and a nice Chianti.
dalton girl must have a ton of fruit plants growing in her tummy now!
Sorry... flashback to 4 years old.
My husband is all about the seedless watermelon, which is always smaller than the seeded. So sometimes I buy the seeded and end up not eating it all because he spoiled me into now not liking seeds.
I don't think I have ever seen one of those peeler tools. What do they look like? I actually don't eat a whole lot of oranges for the same reason--I am too lazy to peel.
The solution to peeling oranges: cut them in quarters, grab the ends and bend them backwards, or inside out, pull off sections and eat, or eat from the fruit side.
I know, I'm awesome.
Also, I thought a tangelo was a cross between a tangerine and an organg, but if so, where does the "l" come from? Maybe like J-Lo doing the tango? All good questions.
that would be "orange" for most of you...
Hey there - just wanted to make sure you know... Your entry was selected for the NieNie book. I announced all of the winning entries today. Thanks so much for sending it in, I loved it and laughed out loud a bunch of times.
Don't tell your readers which post it was - I want them to buy the book to find that out :>
