I declare I don't know what the young men are about nowadays

Last night GH had his interview with a local television station. Thanks to your prayers/vibes/visualizations, it seemed to go well. Because there were so many applicants, they're doing a round of phone interviews first. Next week we should hear if there will be an in-person interview.

At some point during the conversation GH mentioned something he'd seen on the station's website. The interviewer was surprised and said, "You know, you are the first person I've talked to who has gone to our website. I'm going to make a note of that."

If that's the case, then the thank-you note GH put in the mail this morning should really blow his mind.

But seriously? None of the other applicants went on the website? Or, if they did, they didn't make sure to work that into the conversation somehow? I knew resumes were taking a hit, so I guess it makes sense that interview preparation has gone downhill as well. I mean, yay for other people's laziness making GH look even better by comparison, but it's still kind of sad, especially when so many people really, really need a job, are qualified for said job, but just aren't giving strong interviews.

And now I'm starting to think of all the really bad interviews I've been a part of. Thankfully, I was usually on the hiring and end, not on the "spectacularly blowing an interview" end. (Please not that I said usually, not always.) Methinks there should be a post about this . . .

I agree, as an instructor at a college I am always trying to prep and sink it into my students heads how important interviewing is. And yet STILL I have employers call me and tell me that one of my students showed up late and in jeans! It drives me crazy. I thought these things were common sense but apparantely they aren't.

I beat out several kids in high school for a scholarship thing even though all of them were WAY better qualified on paper. My counselor told me that the interviewers said I was the only one who could carry on a conversation with an adult.

My mom said that I wasn't very good at dazzling people with my brilliance, but I sure knew how to baffle them with BS. Kudos to GH and his BS skills.

The ineffectiveness of people trying for a job is amazing. We have people who dress inappropriately or are late for interviews. Maybe GH is fortunate to have a librarian for a wife and understands the need for research before walking in the door, though I thought researching a place of employment was essential for an interview. I guess the basics no longer exist.

Melissa, GH is, indeed, "very fortunate in his choice of wife." In fact, when he told me he had an interview I wheeeeeed and then shouted,"And now we must Prepare!" Which is when the Web-surfing started. Possibly he would have done it on his own, but I think we should both get credit.

I got a job in high school because I was the only applicant who filled out the backside of the application.

And when I went for an interview to be a teacher, the woman who interviewed before me, who was a good deal older than me, walked out of the office wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. I walked in wearing a suit.

Here's hoping he gets a first class ticket to the next round of interviews! (and secretly, I'm hoping the station is on the east coast)

I am an overpreparer for interviews! So yes, it astounds me the people who do nothing. And yes, sometimes behind great men are great women. When Levi went to interview for teaching positions, he knew how to dress, to interview, to do the firm hand shake thing, but I sent him in with a kick butt portfolio of his accomplishments and certifications.

Keeping good vibes going your way!

Recently, I interviewed a guy, for a job where there were many decent applicants. One of the interview questions is why should we give you the job, what makes you stand out from these other worthy applicants? His response, and I kid you not, was: I got here on time this morning (something like 9.30 am). I don't usually get up very early on a Thursday.

He didn't get the job.

Hey, let them all be useless, if it makes him shine brighter and get the job. Yah for GH and may the next round go even more well.
