The King's Speech

Why oh why is this movie rated R? Because it's pretty much everything that I love and want.

British period drama: Check
Colin Firth: Check
Colin Firth Playing The King and Leading His Nation While Winning Academy Awards: Extra double-check

It's rude, is what it is.

What is rude is sharing that trailer when you know the movie is R. I hadn't heard of it, and now I want to see it. Only I can't. Because it is R. Humph!

Hey. The only thing that will make me feel better is to make other people sad too.

Way to show a trailer with COLIN FIRTH having a stuttering problem to a person in love with Colin Firth who has a child with a stuttering.

Turns out the R rated is because of a scene where Colin Firth is encouraged to shout obscenities as a way to overcome his stuttering.
(Am guessing the teens who loiter outside the library have been told the same thing.)

The director successfully appealed in the UK to get the rating changed from 15 to 12. Luckies.

Rationalization alert ahead.... now that I know why it is R I might just accidentally, by mistake of course, end up in the theater. Shhh! ;)

I agree with Lady Susan! Rudeness!!! Now I want to see it but can't because of the R....do you think they will eventually come out with it on that edited thingy that you can download the eddited version to use on your DVD player? My sister has one. Maybe I can see it then. Keeping my fingers crossed

so...i had not heard of it, but now I MUST see it. Colin Firth. Hmmm... Ahhh... OK. I am now debating with myself...Is that whole rated "R" thing just a suggestion, like caffeine? Probably not. Isn't there some DVD player that conveniently edits scenes you don't want to see. I may have to find out who has one...or put it on my Christmas list. Haven't been tempted before. But this is period drama. Colin Firth. Yep, really.

Apparently those obscenities are, like, 50 F-words in a row. Or something. I can't remember where I read that, but I did read it somewhere. I was bitterly disappointed when I read it, since I was very much looking forward to the movie with its Britishness, Colin Firth, and other great actors.

So . . . what if you ask one of your friends that you know will be seeing the movie anyway to tell you when the 50 F-words are happening, and then you could get up and take a bathroom break right before? Because then? POOF! You just saw yourself a PG movie with Colin Firth!

(I mean, if we're starting with the rationalization/bargaining/etc.)

I say if the R rating is due to one scene, there couldn't possibly be an easier movie to edit by finding where the scene is and skipping it! Growing up in Australia, back when I was too young to realise that different countries had their own rating systems, I always wondered what the heck the sweet prophet was on about when he said don't see R rated movies, because to me, a movie had to be a slasher porn movie about drug addicts with tourettes fighting a war naked before it was given the sinister rating of R. So when I heard 'don't watch R movies' at church, I thought, well duh. But when was the last time you heard a general authority specify to not watch R rated movies? Not for a looooong time. These days they say don't watch movies below your morals etc. instead, because 'don't watch R rated movies' doesn't fit the global church population. So rent it, skip the swearing, and enjoy. Spirit of the law. WAY more important.

Swearing doesn't count if it's done in a British accent. And Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was an absolutely amazing woman. I'm seein' it, R-rating be darned!

Except whenever I see Geoffrey Rush, I think of Mystery Men, and his hilarious German accent. He stole every scene he appeared in.

It's true - here in NZ we all got to see the Matrix cos it was rated M, for instance. Stinks for you guys eh?

Audra said... [reply]

Might have to rent and skip... I blame you. Haha! Just kidding. Let us know if you end up rationalizing it!

Tis the season for R-rated movies!! Colin's last oscar nod was also R-rated. Of course, he was gay in that film, so he might not set the ovaries all a-quiver anyway.

On the upside, Masterpiece mystery is showing the British mini-series/drama Sherlock Holmes on Sunday nights. Low on sexiness, but high on wit and quite excellent.

so i have already rationalized myself into wanting to see this anyway. yes, i should feel super guilty and bad about bargaining away my spiritual wellness but i'm so looking forward to this movie. is that so bad??

you all really, really, really need to see the King's speech, saw it, loved it, was not at all offended by one scene with a string of F-bombs as he was trying to learn how to not stutter. he had such a hard time initially swearing at all that it was really endearing,. there are soo many PG-13 movies that are worse for profanity, sexuality and violence that it is ridiculous that this is rated "R"
just saying.....
