You heard it from my dentist first

Kurbis baby hat

Back in January I had my teeth cleaned and told the hygienist that I wanted to skip the X-rays because there was a chance I could be pregnant. When the dentist came in after the cleaning, she told him why we'd passed on the X-rays and he said, "Oh yes? Let's have a look."

Dentist, to the technician: "Want to make a prediction? Check out these gums."

Me: "Actually, that's called gum disease and me not flossing." (Joke's on you, doc!)

Dentist: "Mmm-hmmm. A woman of your age, with gums like that . . . pregnancy is hard on your gums, and it can show up pretty quickly. I've been right before, that's all I'm saying."

I rolled my eyes at him and went on my way.

Next morning, I got in the shower and just about hit the ceiling when the water fire-hosed into my chest. (This is mostly GH's fault--he has tinkered with the water pressure because he thinks that if you leave the shower with intact nipples then you did it wrong. But still. It was worse than usual.)

So at lunch, even though it was still a couple of days before I thought I could get reliable results, grumbling at the know-it-all dentist who was probably just giving me false hope, I took a pregnancy test.

And what do you know--I do have pregnant gums.

I'm 14 weeks along now and feeling good (baby is due around October 6). My top craving has been Philly cheese steaks. I do mine with grilled roast beef, green peppers, provolone, and cream cheese--also I sometimes put butter on the sandwich roll before I toast it, for the calcium. I've converted Spitfire, and the possibility of sharing a sandwich with me can sometimes lure her to my home during the lunch hour.

I am finally able to knit again since it no longer induces nausea, and that cute little pumpkin hat is the first thing I've managed. When I showed it off to GH last night and told him the baby can wear it while we take TDL trick-or-treating this year, he looked at me like I was insane.

GH: We aren't taking the baby trick-or-treating. He won't even be a month old!

Me: So? It'll be fine, I'll just hold the baby in a carrier.

GH: That's RSV season! You want to take him or her out with all those other kids???

Me: What other kids?

GH: The kids! That kids that are running around everywhere all coughing and sick!

Me: Nobody will getting close to me. Exactly how many kids did you see coughing into my boobs last Halloween?

So apparently they hand out RSV along with the Halloween candy. Good to know.

AHHHHHHH!!!!! THAT IS SO EXCITING!!!!!! Huge congratulations!!!! October babies are the bomb-skillet (I have two) except for that whole infant-through-RSV-season. But! It gives you a fabulous reason to send TDL to church with the husband and sit at home having your own spiritual day with the wee babe... for like six months. Seriously. You should do it. It's for the baby.

(Also, I just want to point out here that, in Biblical times, women were considered unclean and prohibited from entering churches for 40 days postpartum if they had a boy, and 80 days if they had a girl. Just a thought.)

They came out with a recent study saying getting xrays while pregnant is in fact okay. Gordon Christensen is a well known dentist and he is the one who came out with the article.
My husband is a dentist and likes to do that type of research.

congrats!

This is incredibly awesome news. For real. I've been wondering if you were going to start trying again and I know getting past 13 weeks felt enormous to me. I'm glad you're feeling well and I wish you the happiest, healthiest, least-anxiety-ridden pregnancy ever!

Ok I had two new posts in my reader and I thought this post was from the OTHER blog and she just barely had a new baby and I was like WHAT ON EARTH HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE and then finally scrolled up and realized it's YOU hosting a womb squatter and was very relieved. And thrilled. Congratulations!!!

Also, who knew about the pregnant gums?

A woman of your age. Maybe at your next visit he is going to encourage you to start picking dentures? That hat is adorable. I think it's amazing you're planning on trick or treating. I look for any excuse not to go.

Congratulations! That sandwich sounds amazing. Also, at the risk of TMI, I have also first suspected pregnancy while taking a shower under an overzealous showerhead. Ouch.

Congratulations! I hate pregnancy more than I can say, but I do like kids, so it all works out. Maybe this pregnancy would be better if it had more cheese steaks in it. I should work on that.

Congratulations!

In regards to the shower abuse, I've thought it would be convenient if someone would invent little self-adhesive nipple umbrellas to help with such situations. Also on the list of desired inventions include a hands-free baby burper and a breastfeeding elevator - boppy's don't always cut it. A few tweaks on the adjustable podium at church could make the elevator possible. (One of the major tweaks being to move it from the chapel because that could get a little awkward.)

Congratulations!

And you have my full permission to take that baby trick-or-treating with you. Mine was born October 6, and he came right along with us this last year. He's still alive and everything.

When he said, "Oh yes? Let's have a look," I thought he was going to put your feet up in stirrups and...

Congratulations, though! Bumper crop of babies this year, and a lot of GIRLS! Cute hat, too. I'm gonna make that.

When my aunt was (unbeknownst to her) pregnant with her last, she went in for a nose job. When she came out after the surgery, the surgeon was like, "Um, yeah, you're pregnant and probably want to know that."

EEEEEEEK, congratulations on the baby! Haha, being able to tell pregnancy just from gums is one of my favorite skills of a dentist. I love how much it took you by surprise that your dentist was able to tell!
