Panicking? Who's panicking? I'm not panicking.

The reason I am not panicking is that blissful little coping mechanism called denial. Denial is my new best friend. We go clothes-shopping and everything. I'm not panicked at all that I have 10 days left to do everything I still need to do. Another thing that's helping me is my other new best friend. Her name is displacement activity. We all have such a fab time.

Yesterday I was supposed to sew up the hem of my skirt, buy groceries, buy and mail a wedding gift, sort through my DVDs, make a cheeseball for Treat Day, and figure out if I can cram my down comforter into a suitcase. Instead, I went out for all-you-can-eat sushi with Cicada, The Perv, and Brother #2. We had a lovely time. I recommend the Vegas roll, which is a big huge portion of tempura-fried goodness. I do not recommend the squid(?) nigiri, because that mess has the consistency of a tire.

I also spent a good part of last night (you know, when I wasn't doing the things I was supposed to) downloading my roommates' CDs onto my computer. That way I get to spend a good part of today listening to things like the sweet sweet strains of Terrence Mann. (He's the voice of the Beast in the Beauty & the Beast musical, which I just copied from my roommate, and man can that guy sing. He's also Javert in Les Miserables and Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel, if you want to know exactly how big of a geek I am. Anyway, voice like butter, people. Voice. Like. Butter.)

This morning I couldn't disappoint my sweet coworkers who wanted the cheeseball, so I bought the supplies on my way to work and made the thing at my desk. It turned out very well, I might add. Then Martha Stewart called me to ask for tips, but I just said, "Dream on, jailbird!" and hung up.

If anyone else has suggestions of other fun displacement activities, feel free to post them!

(Sorry---I had to leave it alone for effect!)

Other displacement do not include going to see P&P. It's not released till November.

Yeah, I just read that. And it's a limited release, so maybe UT won't even get it. Pooh heads.

I should have plenty of tips for you, but I can't seem to remember what I did to waste all of my time before coming. The good thing is that eventually you will get everything done and then leave and all will right and well.

I've been seeing P&P posters all over the place here and I could have sworn the release date was in just a few weeks. I'll check on that, but just maybe you won't have to wait as long as everyone in the United States.

I find this is the perfect time to decide to make a drastic change to your hair, it takes TONS of time to search all the pop culture mags so you can copy some fabulously indulgent celebrity cut and color. Seriously, new life opportunities always yield new hair opportunities. Plus, then you get to waste even more time buying new products for styling and of course all the bathroom time necessary to practice styling it yourself so that it's suitable for public because of course the cut will NEVER look like the one of maybe let's say Sarah Jessica Parker in the August 2004 People you found while displacing yourself. . Not that I have ever done that, just an idea.

1. Blogging.
2. Anxiety attack. If you can work up a full-fledged one, with chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness, that works great. Not as fun as looking for photos of star hair, but effective. Because you're sick, and can't possibly be expected to fulfill any responsibilities.
3. Get a bunch of things on your plate that are all equally critical. Waste time from one activity by completing one of the others.
4. Insaniquarium. Because it's a well-known fact that playing puzzle games can prevent Alzheimer's. And what do you have going on now that's more important than that? Because if you get Alzheimer's, none of the stuff you're doing now will matter anyway. Okay, so this isn't a puzzle game. But it sort of is, because you have to figure things out.
5. Cleaning house. Unless you're trying to put off cleaning house. Then you're back to blogging.

Ooooh, see, these are all excellent ideas.

Danalee--getting my hair cut the day before I leave. I'm thinking I should be blonder, but that's about as drastic as I want to go just yet.

Hass--I'll pass on the flu, thanks.

I agree heartily with all those who said "blogging." I think that's what I'll do.

Displacement activities--
I like to clean and sort everything: shower, wash dishes, laundry, ironing, re-organize desk, etc. As I do the chores I always go through a emotional cycle towards my roommates.
The inner monologue:
1. "I should take care of my stuff so that the house looks better."
2. "Holy cow! Why don't my roommates clean up any of their stuff? They must not care about me or themselves."
3. "I can't force them; I should relax."
4. "The important thing is that I can make the house a little cleaner, not whether or not my roommates take orders from me."
5. "'Cleaniless is next to godliness!' I must destroy them!"
6. "But is cleaniless right next to godliness, or is it, you know, maybe down the street a bit."

The usual diverges here into singing a song or maybe just watching ESPN or Comedy Central.
Then I remember that I'm supposed to be doing somoething important that's due in 15 minutes.
