Is Edwina going on holiday?
Ten points if you know what that's from.
So. Yesterday was pretty much the best day ever, because I booked a holiday! My very first English holiday and I booked it and gave them English pounds and everything for it.
In 20 days I'm leaving for Gran Canaria with Goldilocks, because she needs a break from the English weather as much as I do. We'll get to spend 7 heavenly days napping on the beaches and snorkeling and being warm and eating seafood and feeling actual sunshine on our skin and getting sand for my collection and avoiding cockroaches and the time-share salespeople.
Our hotel will be "allocation on arrival" so we could end up at pretty much any resort on the island. We're guaranteed at least 2-star accommodation, though. And either a balcony or terrace. And I put in a request for quiet rooms on a not-ground floor, because that is safer.
So now I'm finding it hard to concentrate on things NOT related to my vacation. When I walked home in the pelting freezing rain/snow, I thought, "Huh. It's freezing and wet right now. Also I'm going to the Canary Islands." I've already started making lists of things to take with me:
- My Chacos
- Sunscreen (lots)
- Sunglasses
- Euros
- Kicky skirts
And I want to tell absolutely everyone about my trip. "Hi, I need to check out this book and pay my fine, and also did you hear that I'm going to Gran Canaria? Because I am. They're expecting me."

Chicken run. Google told me.
TEN points for one of the easiest movie lines ever? That seems excessive. I wasn't going to give that many points for my latest movie line, which no one got, btw. I'm slightly disappointed in your dad for having to check Google.
Love your impending trip, and love that they're expecting you. I hope you get a four-star hotel, though, b/c you deserve that.
As you may already know, I spent some time in Spain. I suppose Gran Canaria is as similar to Spain as American Samoa is to America (meaning all of the americas). If they are available, there are things you must try:
*Palmera con nata y chocolate. (It's a pastry with a thin layer of whipped cream and covered in chocolate--heavenly.)
*Chorizo--it's sausage, and it's glorious.
*Tapas--go to any bar or Cafe and sample the wonderful selection of finger foods.
*Tortilla--It's the Spanish kind. Essentially it's a potato and onion omelette, but I think they put addictive chemicals in it.
*Paella (con mariscos)--it's Spanish rice the real way. Mariscos is seafood, and it's wonderful..
There are many other wonderful things, but my memories fade. This list is the complete list of things I actually miss about Spanish cuisine. Oh, and buy some fruit at the fruit stands. They don't let you choose your own, the fruits are generally smaller and more scarred, but the flavor is much better than the fruit we get here.
I just thought I'd share...

Curse you, anonymous! Cheaters never prosper!
HEY! I knew it without cheating.... the big o used to really like Chicken Run, we used to watch it twice a week.
And I am so jealous. I wish I could go and book a trip to somewhere with warm water. oh well. Have fun being warm!
Chicken Run!!! I knew that before I looked at the comments.
Sounds fun. A friend of mine went on her misison to the Canary Islands. She'd write long missives about morning runs on the beach with her companion and how their apartment had a view of the ocean. Doesn't seem fair to other missionaries somehow.
That sounds so heavenly. Have fun.
Stupid BYU Study Abroad wouldn't let us go to Gran Canarias. Someday I'm going to go back and see it all.
Beautiful water. I love the ocean. Are you going to get on over to Europe sometimes while you live so close to it?
Lucky you! Hope you have fun! r
I never saw Chicken Run...I suck. But now I know what to go rent one of these nights, when I'm not drowning in finals...
You must also make sure you eat churros with chocolate for breakfast at least once while you are there. They are nothing like the "churros" in America, and the "chocolate" is basically like warm chocolate pudding that you dip them in... Very tasty
