World Book Day

Did y'all know about this? I guess there's this thing called World Book Day, and it's this big huge deal, only the UK hasn't invited America to play yet.

Only now that we know about it, we can play if we want. For example, I will be going into town today to one of the fine bookshops, where I will check out the special 1 pound books that are available today. I'm thinking I'll get one for Savvy, just to scare her dad about the possibility of her growing up British with all the subliminal messages I send her (like when I use the word bit instead of part and say uni work instead of homework, or the way I'm going to start secretly mailing her packs of McVitties and pictures of Prince William).

Anyway, I will let everyone else decide how they're going to observe this blessed World Book Day. A few suggestions if none are coming to mind:

  • Go to the library
  • Go to a bookstore
  • Go to amazon.com if you're really that lazy or deskbound
  • Read a book
  • Read a book to someone
  • Read a children's book if you just don't have the attention span
  • Dress up like a book character
  • Dress up like a book
  • Dress up like a librarian
  • Dress up like a naughty librarian
  • Refrain from burning books
  • Refrain from burning librarians
  • Try a new author
  • Write a book, get it published, become rich and famous

See? No matter which option you choose, today is pretty much win-win.

ps. The beautiful and culinarily-talented DanaLee has just pointed out that it's Dr. Seuss's birthday today! So all right-thinking people should go to Seusseville and take a look around.

Nem, PERFECTO! Today is also Dr. Seuss' birthday. We are totally dressing up at school, making the Cat in the Hat hats. Guess what we are eating for snack? GREEN EGGS AND HAM of course. The color part maybe lost on my bitty ones given they are blind, but hey it's the thought that counts right? So thanks for your invite count me in!

I am totlaly going with the naughty librarian option. I figure that just means I wear my glasses and my hair up in a bun with a pencil stuck through it. Then I can just pull out the pencil and shake my hair ever so seductively and in slow motion if possible. Right?

What's a McVittie?

Oh my gosh, are you serious, Danalee? I didn't even realize it was Dr. Seuss day. Back at my old job one year I had a B-day party for Doctor Seuss in one of the conference rooms. Good times, good times.

And Kelly, you know exactly where I'm going with this. Also fishnet stockings would be good, I think. McVitties are these digestive biscuits that people eat over here, and at first I thought they had something to do with constipation. But no, they're just hard cookies. The ones with chocolate on top are good, though.

McVities is a biscuit brand name- Jaffa cakes!!!!!

And I thought all Librarians were naughty.....guess I have a lot to learn.

I actually used to kinda look forward to this day while I was in school because they gave out book tokens for £1, but nearly no-one else wanted them, so I had them all....Bwuahahahahahhahahahhah!!!!

Hmmmmm.....naughty librarian. I'm liking this one. Seeing as I am stuck at my school for Parent Teacher conferences, that really limits my options. If I did the naughty librarian thing I might scare some parents; that could be fun.
Maybe I'll just stick to 'refrain burning books'. I think I can handle that one.

I've decided to pick two of your suggestions for celebrating World Book Day--I shall refrain from burning both books and librarians. It sure feels good to be a part of something.

Mmmm... biscuits...

Lola is celebrating by participating in the school storytelling festival. She will win, b/c she always does, with her dramatic flair, southern accent, and using words like "sinister."

Thanks for the info!!! I've got to share this with my kids! Way to go Miss N at being such a purveyor of truth and information.

Nem- I just blogged about this and the American version couple of hours ago... I should have been reading to catch up on your blogs first! Over in the USA the NEA (National Educator's Association) sponsors the Read Across America Day, in honor of Dr. Seuss's B-day. But, apparently, it's not as well known as World Book Day is in the UK.

Happy World Book Day!

Book discussion in car on the way to school today:

Lola: We had an author come to our class yesterday.

Genius 7 yo: Why didn't they come to us?

L: Maybe because he only went to the OLDER classes.

G7YO: I read Harry Potter in six months (this was back when he was six).

L: I read it in a week.

What could the poor kid say to THAT? Shut. Down. I hope he will not become too disheartened, and will still celebrate the day.

I will TRY not to burn a librarian...but it's gonna be hard, let me tell you.

And as for dressing as a naughty librarian? Well, that's an every day occurence chez moi.

Easy. I'm already AT the library because I work here. I do hope no one tries to burn me. I don't think I could hold my temper. :)
