Happy Halloween

Tonight my Mom is making homemade donuts and we're having friends over. Actually, I'm inviting one friend. The rest are Mom and Dad's. I'm hoping lots of people bail or get caught in a snowdrift so that I can eat all the donuts. Will take pictures!

We're prepared for the trick-or-treaters, but they'll have to be a hardy lot since there is snow on the ground and it's supposed to be really cold tonight. On Sunday it dumped 8 inches during the 2 hours we were in church. Madness. There is a ward trunk-or-treat and Halloween carnival at the church tonight, but the word on the street is that the Young Women (ages 12-18) aren't going to be helping out because they want to go trick-or-treating. Tell you what, I don't think I'll be giving candy to any 15-yr-olds. I wanted to get a bag of something gross like Tootsie Rolls or those awful pink blobs of bubble gum that taste like asphalt and come in the yellow & blue wrapper. Does anyone know what kind I'm talking about? Anyway, I would keep the crap candy available for people past the age of trick-or-treating.

Now I should confess my shameful secret: I'm totally into Christmas already. I know I shouldn't be, but it's been snowing and there are rosy-cheeked children sledding in the backyard and I've just burned all my mom's Christmas music and I am in The Zone. Plus I found this book at my notjob and had to bring it home with me.

Do any of you already know Robert Sabuda's stuff? I'd never heard of him but the man is pretty much a genius. Look at this! The pictures don't really do it justice. I had been looking for kids' Christmas books at Jenny's request and came across this one. As soon as I opened it I knew I wouldn't be giving this to small children. Ever. They can have board books like regular children-who-just-eat-their-books-anyway. Jenny thinks I'm a jerk for not giving it to her kids, or to her, but that's just because she thinks all presents should be for her. But to show her that I am a loving big sister I will let her look at it when her kids are asleep.

Tootsie Rolls and bubble gum are the best! Of course Nestle Crunch, Kit Kats, Reece Cups, Milkyway bars are excellent too. And oh yeah, 3 Musketeers, and snickers and...

Those pix of the book are beautiful. I think I might have to hunt down the book at Borders or something.

You only have a two-hour church?

Ditto on the trick-or-treating-after-twelve-years-old thing. The bubble gum would be just retribution. Could the stuff get any harder?

I LOVE Robert Sabuda's stuff! He is a freaking genius! Have you seen his "Alice in Wonderland," or "America the Beautiful," or "The Wizard of Oz"? They are A-MAZING!

And I'm with you...kids shouldn't be allowed to touch these books. Because, well, they're delicate.

Two years ago, a friend of mine decided to celebrate the older trick-or-treating crowd. He made little certificates and rolled them up with some cool shell that made the kids go "wow, cool!" - hehe. The certificates really just said "Congratulations! You are officially too old to be trick-or-treating. Don't come next year." They didn't, so he must be on to something...

Hi Dad!

Desmama, it was stake conference last week so it was only 2 hours. I should have clarified that! It's in the summer that Alaskans only go to church for one hour. ;-)

Lindsay, I haven't seen those but now I'll be looking for them!

Mom, I'm onto you.

Kristeee, your friend is an evil genius.

Nemesis...the crap candy for teenagers is absolutely brilliant. I'm doing it.

While I can understand getting in the Christmas mood when there is a foot of snow outside and only 3 hours of sunlight a day, I CANNOT understand the SLC radio station that decided Oct. 31 should be the day they start their 24/7 Christmas music coverage. Seriously, it is 50 degrees outside, the sun is shining, most trees still have their leaves. Let us have Halloween! Isn't it kind of sacrilegious to play Christmas music on Halloween? At least House is new tonight. That is how I'll be spending my Halloween.

Hey--my last year of trick-or-treating was in 9th grade....I was 14. A lot of my students are planning to go tonight.

I'm hoping I still have some candy left over after tongight. I got these cool 'kissables'--miniature Hershey's kisses that are candy-coated (like M&M's).

My mom has all those pop up books and NO ONE under the age of 12 is allowed to touch them. They're georgeous--also Costco often carries them around Christmas time.

My Southern librarian friend adores Robert Sabuda and brings one of his books to our book group every time we meet. And every time she says, in her drawl, "Robert Sabuda is gay, but ah just luuuve him!"

Cracks me up. Every single time.

Wow, that book is inspiring. I must check out the rest of his stuff.

I love it! None of this free candy business - make 'em march through the snow for it!! hahaha

My mom has all of the books too. I will have to remind her to keep them out of reach of the paper shredder at Christmas.

Last night, I gave out tootsie rolls and that gum you were talking about. It's called "super bubble" with red and yellow stuff all over it.

My solution for teen-aged trick-or-treaters?

Condiment packages.

We actually got seniors at our house! what imature dolts! I wouldn't have given them anything but my mom made me. So we gave them playdough, which is still fun, but they don't get the satisfaction of the candy.
