20 Random things about me

I decided to go with 20 rather than 50. You're welcome.

1. I use my hands a lot when I talk. Only I don't know ASL, so the hand movements really don't do anyone any good.

2. I pace when I talk on the phone.

3. About once a year I binge on Regency romance novels. That is my guilty reading secret. I like the witty banter (and the 3-paragraph kisses). I hate it if they end up sleeping together before the wedding, because that's just trashy.

4. My pinkies are abnormally short. They're not nubbins or anything, they just don't appear to have grown since 1988.

5. I met Hulk Hogan when I was 10, in my school library.

6. "Love Shack" is quite possibly my least favorite song ever. It makes my brain want to run out my ears.

7. You know how when you bring treats to a gathering there's always the person who takes more than they should? I sometimes worry that I'm that person. I once spent an entire party at the spinach dip.

8. I was almost 20 when I had my first kiss. My mom couldn't believe it, and said my senior prom date should have at least kissed me "to be nice."

9. I talk in my sleep--sometimes so loudly that I wake myself up.

10. Blue foods & drinks creep me out. They fly in the face of nature.

11. I never thought I would graduate from college. I thought I would get engaged after the first year, because people said that's what happens when you go to BYU. I need to go find those people and set them straight.

12. I wish I'd lightened up in high school and had more fun.

13. I'm a wuss when it comes to needles--I almost passed out the last time I got a flu shot.

14. One time Jenny & Ed invited over a friend of his because they wanted to set us up. That will always be remembered as the night I sneezed and farted at the same time. Needless to say, we never went out.

15. I would love to have a low, husky, jazz-singer voice. Instead I sound like a mouse singing through its nose.

16. I blush when I get confrontational. I really wish I didn't, because it's a lot harder to be taken seriously when you're turning bright red from the chest up.

17. I wish I'd been nicer to my little brothers and sisters when we all lived together.

18. I don't like to drive. People who go for a drive when they're upset just baffle me, because driving is one of the things that makes me upset in the first place.

19. I can't drive a stick shift. When I try I make the poor car hop like a frog.

20. I won my state's National History Day competition in high school for my paper on child labor. Of course, it was Alaska so probably only about 3 other people entered. I choose not to let this lessen my triumph.

1. I hear you on Love Shack. That is possibly one of the top reasons for my divorce. After, you know, the cheating, drinking, and lying.

2. For a long time (at about age 10) Lola's favorite thing to say right before family prayer was, "What if you sneezed, farted, burped, coughed, and hiccuped at the same time?" Then she would laugh hysterically for about half an hour. Family prayer became a very long, drawn out process. It would have been funny if you had come over and demonstrated your talents for us.

3. I seem to remember lending you my stickshift car. If that's true, and that really happened, I also remember being nervous, lest I get it back with the transmission dragging on the ground. Maybe you had Kim drive or something. I just remember the panic in your eyes.

I can't believe you like Regency Romance Novels. You cut me real deep. I don't know if I will ever be able to look at you the same again.

Oh, Bob The Builder. I was pretty sure I had a shot at him after the sneezing/farting incident. Too bad for him. He missed out on BOTH of us.

Daltongirl, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you don't cheat, drink, or lie anymore.

Also, you were right to be nervous about lending me your car. It was Kar's who really took the beating, though.

Jen, I know. That's why I said it was my guilty reading secret.

He was very gentlemanly about the whole thing, though, if you remember. BtB is a quality guy. Too bad we missed our chance. :-)

Ditto on Love Shack. I CRINGE every time I hear that song.

I might be more of a history nerd than you. I JUDGED the Utah National History Day Contest. Let me say you can tell the difference in the amount of funding that goes into a school system by the quality of the projects. The kids from Orem were spinning out Power Point presentations while kids from a place like Tropical were giving us poster board cut outs. It was 1999 after all so Power Point still impressed people back then.

1. I used to love 'Love Shack'--now it kinda bugs.

2. I totally remember you pacing when we lived together. Sometimes you'd pace into my room; I found it kinda funny.

3. I love driving. It's therapeutic for me--control behind the wheel, music playing, just me and my thoughts.

I can't stand Love Shack or indeed anything else in the B-52s catalogue.

Blue foods ARE disjusting. Whoever heard of a neon-blue raspberry? Most artificially colored foods freak me out.

I used to love Regency romances but haven't read one in years. No moral judgments attached.

What, exactly, are Regency romances? Are they a brand, a romance written in the Regency period (like by an Austen wannabe), or a romance set in the Regency period? I'm so confused. Also, what bookworm doesn't wished they had lightened up a bit in high school.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Scully, regency romances are set in the Regency period. Wikipedia provides a much better description here.

I was also uptight in high school, and I hate blue food and driving. And at parties I totally hog the food. But I had my first kiss at 23, so I guess I'm an even bigger nerd :)

I had a roommate in college who refused to eat anything that was blue because blue is not a naturally occurring food color in nature.

For April Fool's one year, one girl in our ward, who was roommates with the gal who worked the apartment office, broke into all the guys' apartments and colored their milk with food dye. Whereas I and a couple roommates thought this was great (I didn't have to look for my name on the label because I could just grab the pink milk), my other roommate threw his out because she dyed his blue. And he had only drunk a half glass of milk.

Noelle F, I'm glad you understand. Stupidest. Song. Ever.

WOW, Abby. Yeah, you win. I never would have won if I'd been up against the Orem kids. I'd never even heard of PowerPoint in 99.

Kristen, maybe if I was driving a big nice car like yours I would like driving more. But I doubt it. Sad . . .

Azucar, thanks for not judging me. In return, I hope that you go into a brief and painless labor right this very second.

Foxyj, you are kind. We should go to a party together. One of us could run interference while the other eats all the food.

Edgy, I say the exact same thing that your old roommate does, about blue foods not occurring in nature--except for blueberries, of course, and what happens when you boil red cabbage (learned THAT the hard & gross way). I don't think I would have tossed out the milk, though.

I just have to say ditto to 2, 3, 8, 9, 11 & 12. Wow, it keeps creeping me out how much I have in common with you. I've been lurking around your blog for a while now, much as I hate to be a creepy stalker. It's almost like reading a wittier version of my own life (I work at a library - except I'm a book conservator and my stint in England didn't end in my getting a masters degree, am from Alaska originally and am also "old and unmarried"). Do you think we could be long lost twins? :) Thanks for making me laugh and sorry your stats are down, I find that strange since I've been telling all my friends about your blog and how hilarious it is...

Nemesis said... [reply]

Carly, we probably ARE long lost twins. And I'm so glad you've spoken up--thanks a lot for the compliment. After visiting your blog(s) just now I'm the jealous one. If I come visit Boston will you teach me how to knit & crochet like you? I've knitted one project and would love to be able to do more.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Oh! Carly! How are you related to the Stancliffs???

Lippy said... [reply]

"driving is one of the things that makes me upset in the first place."

That should be my motto.

I pace when I talk on the phone, and it the habit didn't even stop when I got put on crutches!

I can't drive a stick either. Every friend I have can, and they all want to teach me, but I don't wanna pay the repair bills!

Carly said... [reply]

Yes, I'm related to the Stancliff's, that's how I found your blog. My bro. married Mary Stancliff (we were also good friends in H.S.) and her s-i-l Amy (Steve's wife) told me I should check out your blog when I was visiting for X-mas.
If you come to Boston I will *totally* teach you to knit, or crochet, or both!

Number 11 disturbs me.

I used to like driving, but after three years on a bicycle in Japan now it bores me. I need the car here, but I do miss being on the bike.
