Get ready to OD on Sumptuous Literary Adaptations

It all begins tonight. Changes are afoot at Masterpiece Theatre, including the recruitment of Gillian Anderson as a new host. Which makes sense now that she's basically British. Will be listening on Jan 13th to see if she and Madonna share the same mid-Atlantic accent. As will a whole lot of X-Philes, I'm sure.

Anyway, Scully will be hosting the "Masterpiece Classic" portion of the season, which will include the Jane Austen Season, a new adaptation of Room With A View, a Judi Dench & Co. miniseries, and some film starring Daniel Radcliffe's Eyebrow.

Tonight and next Sunday they're rebroadcasting last year's Best Jane Eyre Adaptation Ever, which I believe I have already mentioned and shown to my friends and urged you all to watch even if it means locking the other members of your household up in the cellar. Really. You deserve this.

But then, THEN on January 13th the Jane Austen Season starts with Persuasion. Remember about Persuasion? And how we've waited 9 months for it to be aired in the US? Because yeah. If you're a girl and are fortunate enough to have a supportive and drama-appreciating Significant Other who likes to watch SLAs with you, then you may want to tell him to skip this one. He might be offended when your bosom starts heaving and you launch yourself off the couch to go do filthy things to the TV screen. Do like my sister Jenny is doing--throw a Bosom-Heaving Persuasion Party with your like-minded friends. Be sure to wear coordinating Victoria Secret pajamas--they're all the rage.

Persuasion.... *sigh* If only life were like a Jane Austen novel.

Minus the disease. And with slightly less social iniquity.

Oh. My. Goodness. Thank you, thank you for this!! I have set my DVR to record Masterpiece Theatre. I have to admit...my dad used to watch MT and I thought it was something for boring people (not saying my dad is boring). I'm glad they are revamping it and starting fresh for 2008.

Actually, Gillian Anderson spent quite a bit of her childhood in England so one would hope she would have a fairly authentic accent. And I'm very excited to enjoy two of my obsessions rolled into one. Also, what a nice service of PBS, to alleviate the January blahs with a bunch of lush literary adaptations!

I loved that Eyre interpretation. I forgot to set the DVR, but it would have been a repeat viewing for me.

Persuasion? It's really going to be better than the last movie version?

I can't wait to watch. I won't be inviting any friends over because the literary adaptations are alone time for me. No one gets to see how soft and mushy I get while watching them. My hard exterior shell must be preserved!

Azucar, I don't think it's a better movie than the 1995 version, but the two leads are fabulous. You remember about Rupert Penry-Jones, right?

For all the Austen obsessed women out there, you should read Shannon Hale's Austenland. It's very funny.

I am psyched for MT's new format. I heard they are also bringing back the American classics too. They did a version of Willa Cather's Song of the Lark that was really good.

Can you kindly tell me when Persuasion is going to air on Masterpiece Theater? I saw the whole thing on YouTube before it was deleted. A worthy adaptation. Enjoyed reading your blog. Will add to my favorites.

Sure thing, True Janian Reply--Persuasion should air on Sunday, January 13th. I would check your local PBS website though to be sure they're following that schedule. Because you really don't need that kind of heartache. And welcome to my blog, I hope we'll hear more from you. :-)

Just to make you a little bit more jealous.... Sense and Sensibility is great so far!

I just finished watching Persuasion on PBS and I really think they shortened the kiss scene! Did anyone else notice that?

Not that I watched it a million times on YouTube last spring so I would notice the change or anything.

It was still very long, but I think the original version was even longer.

Anyone?
