In which I win "Best Wife Ever" award

I married a nerd. A handsome, smart, funny nerd, but a nerd nonetheless. I am not sorry about this in any way. It does, however, means that sometimes adventures like the following are bound to happen.

GH has been beyond excited about J.J. Abram's upcoming Star Trek film. Excited like he has been calling me over to the computer for the past 5 months to watch every single teaser trailer that has come out. And the 2nd-angriest I've ever seen him was when I behaved in a dismissive manner toward one of the trailers. I believe the words "I don't love you anymore!" possibly came out, which is when we got to have the conversation called "Yeah . . . we do not actually use those words to each other, get it?"

(1st-angriest I've ever seen him = the time I told him I couldn't see what was so bad about our slightly fuzzy TV screen picture, and couldn't we just live with the fuzz. You would think I'd just announced that there was no difference between Star Wars and Star Trek. And also that I was having an affair. With someone who also did not know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek. And also Lost sucks. He couldn't even stand still, he was so infuriated that I could just sit there being so incredibly wrong.)

So there's your backstory. As soon as was humanly possible, GH bought tickets to see the new Star Trek this coming Friday (opening weekend) on an IMAX screen. We're going with a bunch of friends, so it should be a good time. But then GH ended up with a free pass to go to an advance screening of the film at 10:00am May 2nd. There was no question that he would be using this free pass, even if he already did have a ticket. I indicated that he was welcome to take one of his other friends as his guest and I would just content myself with seeing the movie next weekend (you know, because I'm a giver). But the friends fell through, so I said I would go with him.

For the first time in our married life (and possibly ever in GH's), we both got up at 7:00 on a Saturday morning and drove downtown to pick up our tickets. GH had been told that the tickets would be available at 8:00am, and I'd found us a breakfast place to try before the movie, which I was very excited about. Turns out that was wrong, and they weren't being handed out til 9:00am. Our breakfast plans now shot, GH very manfully headed out in the rain to hunt/gather us some food. I know I have moral objections to McDonalds and everything, but my word those hash brown bars must be laced with crack. He even went back to get me ketchup. The bonus of being there so early was that we were near the frontish of the line. One woman had been there since 6:40. Because she was insane.

Then we hung out in the theatre with all the other fans and had fun chatting and eavesdropping. I only saw one guy wearing a Captain Kirk shirt. Trenchcoat Guy, just head of us with his wife and sons, was very anxious about the seating and whether he would be able to get the seat he wanted. We also heard him boast that he named all of his sons after X-men characters (Scott, Logan, etc) with his wife being none the wiser. (I really like to think that I would be able to catch GH out at this and that my nerd-dar might ping at names like like Locke, Wash, Faith, Buffy, Marty McFly, Egon, etc.)

Then Trenchcoat Guy started talking about the movie Wolverine, and about the backstory that isn't included in the movie. I listened for a bit and noticed GH shaking his head. "What that guy is saying is completely wrong. He's a nerd and what he's saying is wrong."

GH explained, "There is nothing worse than a nerd who has his facts wrong. I mean, he's a nerd. He should know. If anyone should know, he should. It's just embarrassing."

Me: "Really. Nothing worse."

GH: "Nope."

Me: "Worse than Nazis, even."

GH: "Well, they're probably about equal. Because there were probably some Nazis who were all gung-ho but didn't really have their facts straight either."

So there you have it.

Also? The movie was really good. Will admit to being just a tiny bit excited to see what it's going to look like on the IMAX screen on Friday.

Please, so no more about the McDonald's hashbrowns--my gag reflexes are being tapped. When I was 14 a friend and I went through the McD drive-through (her choice) b/c we were going out of town early. I took a bite out of the hashbrown that actually smelled pretty good, but as I pulled it away it just kept coming. To my disbelief, lots of hair was matted in the thing, was long, and stringy. So I'm pretty sure that's what they are "laced" with. I have never been able to view McD the same, and have never actually eaten fast food since. (Except for like, pizza).

Consider yourself warned!!

Someone in Joe's deacon's quorum told him that he was not, technically, a 'nerd' because he was "neither unattractive nor lacking in style" . They informed him that he was actually a 'geek'. You may have to re-classify GH.

So sorry you missed breakfast at Lamb's Grill, it is a lovely place with wonderful food. But an advanced screening is something you don't get everyday.

Carina said... [reply]

I am so jealous about the advanced screening that I could spit nails.

Also, is he watching Dollhouse? Because I need to talk about Alpha.

And then I will have to explain to you the amnesiabullets joke that's been going around.

You will only 'best wife ever' award after baking a cake that looks like the Enterprise to celebrate the movie this Saturday. I want pictures.

Also, I feel you pain/devotion. Except for us it's comic books--I'd never really read one until I met my husband. I still don't read a lot of them, but I know all about the DC Universe now. I understand that Wednesday is the day to buy new comics at the store. We saw The Dark Knight in IMAX on the first day it came out. We're even indoctrinating our daughter and she has quite the collection of comics herself. (Don't she and the Big O look happy here?) So I guess I'm just turning into a nerd by association.

I'm a nerd. We love LOST: we've never missed an episode, but I have stayed away from fan sites, because, yeah, I don't waste enough time on Blogger. The boys' Star Ward fascination is probably mostly my fault. If Bruce Wayne ever materialized in my living room I might seriously consider leaving Plantboy. Arwen and Leia are probably my top choices if we ever get a daughter. I re-read Ender's game often enough to qualify as a 14 year-old boy. I'll just stop now.

Oh, and those hashbrowns are probably #1 on my guilty pleasures list. Thanks for telling about the hair, Spitfire. THAT tidbit made my day. And who doesn't eat fast food? Talk about being posessed by aliens. . .

Spitfire, your story just made me throw up and now you are dead to me.

Jeri, I will look into the reclassification thing. I do find GH mightily attractive but I'm not sure that hoodies and nerd T-shirts constitute style. (He thinks I'm just jealous because his shirts get more compliments than mine do. As if.)

GjB, it will happen. One of these weekends, it will happen. :-)

Azucar, we are definitely a Dollhouse home. And the Alpha thing was awesome. Can't wait to hear the joke explanation!

FoxyJ, it was Free Comic Book day on Saturday so that's where we went after the movie. Which is where I kind of hit my limit.

STM, if you name a girl Arwen or Leia then you DEFINITELY qualify as a nerd, I'm thinking. :-) And just ignore my sister, she's trying to ruin something sacrad.

Nemesis said... [reply]

"sacred," sorry.

I camped out for 9 days to see Star Wars... do I get a few nerd points for that! And I have the best Jedi cloak ever!

Other than that... not into too much of the sci-fi stuff... BUT... I did see the trailer and I thought it looked good and maybe actually something I would watch.

And Levi and I really want to see Wolverine! We have seen every X-men movie in the theater. But now that we have so many darn kids, it is hard to get the cheap YW girl babysitter... so unless we fork out at least $40 for a sitter... sigh. I think we may each go seperately and see it! That is how much we want to see it in the theater!

Just this weekend I was telling boyfriend that if he didn't want to come to Star Trek with me he didn't have to. He said I could drag him if I really wanted to and I promised I would wait a week or two after it came out so there would be less people dressed up.

He is though, considering taking July 15th off work this summer so he can accompany me to the midnight premier of Harry Potter. I informed him I would be dressed up for that one though.

Nemesis said... [reply]

The nice people about dragging "others" to see this Star Trek movie is that you really don't need to have much backstory at all. There are little moments for true Trekkies to geek out over, but otherwise it just sets itself up as a good story, I think.

Musings of the Mrs. said... [reply]

Wow. You're going twice? You ARE a giver.

Nemesis said... [reply]

I meant to say "the nice THING" about dragging people to Star Trek. So help me, my brain is melting. I should just go back to bed.

CoolBoy said... [reply]

Wow, I've always thought that GH and I needed to hang out more, but now I think it's a crime that I've been so slow about it. That's hilarious.

Also, I just found out today that the weirdo from Heroes is playing Spock. That kinda made me mad. I hate that kid.

Giggles said... [reply]

The weirdo from Heroes who is playing Spock also played a character on 24 a few seasons ago (we just got into it last fall and have spent the last 6 months watching the first six seasons on DVD). It took me a good while to get used to seeing him not be evil.

He'll be glad to know he doesn't need to know much back story. That's actually one of his concerns with me dragging him to see it.

As a self-professed geek (and yes, it's geek, not nerd), I have been sent by those on high to welcome you to our world, Nem. You've dipped your toes in our otherwordly waters for some time now, but you dove in head first last weekend. And since you are married to the King of Nerdom, you are crowned Queen by default. Hail your majesty.

P.S. See you Friday. :) Live long and prosper. And make babies.

Wow! So many tangents. My head is about to explode! My daughter has this whole other "secret" life that I am just becoming aquainted with. Or is it my son-in-law? Anyway, I want to see Star Trek, and I thought I wanted to see Wolverine, so I googled the trailers, mostly just to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt. But it was a big disapointment because cooldad is much hotter than HJ any day!

Sean said... [reply]

I'm basically going to see it because of Zachary Quinto, AKA That Weirdo from Heroes. SO CUTE.

JustMe said... [reply]

Geek - your husband is a GEEK - not a nerd.

My son-in-law is also a geek. However, he is a very tall, very good-looking, very well dressed (thanks to his wife) geek.

She says Geeks make the best husbands. If all geeks are like her husband, I think I would have to agree. I ADORE my son-in-law.

PS - I bought him a lego set for Christmas. He was one happy camper.

Audra said... [reply]

Can we have a post where the difference between Geek and Nerd are outlined! I have heard about this a lot lately, even on the radio last night! A nerd was chastising the DJ for calling him a Geek! I want to get my facts strait... and if it was presented Nem-style... it would be a lot more fun to read!

Nells-Bells said... [reply]

love this! don't we all have a nerdy side embedded within us??

AW Cake! said... [reply]

Ahhh, the nerd husband. I married one too and he's been making plans to see the Star Trek movie for months. I have to admit, though, that the nerds make the best husbands - just as long as you don't disturb them while they're watching the SciFi channel!

(I found you through a friend & think I might have to visit again. Very funny.)

CoolBoy said... [reply]

@Sean

"So Cute"?
Are you kidding? It's pretty hard to respect a man that needs a different set of fake eyebrows for each show he's in. Even for Syler the brain-eater.

Kelly said... [reply]

So jealous (because I too am a nerd, though not to the degree of some)! A friend of Jason's got free passes and they went last week and saw it on IMAX. I was a little broken up about it, but tried to be understanding. It's not like Jason could ask his friend if I could go instead of the friend.

CWYoung said... [reply]

I read this to my husband and he was laughing because the dynamic in your relationship is a lot like ours AND he KNEW you were telling the truth.

Trevor is a lot like GH and I refer to him as a nerd. In fact, when we lived in L**** (AKA hell on earth, AKA the great white north) he worked at the local comic book shop (mystic). I, however, referred to it only as either The Nerd Shoppe, or Ye Olde Nerd Shoppe.

Trevor is more into comics that GH is but GH is more into TV their devotion mirrors each others'- which makes them a pretty good nerd-couple (when they get together).

Nemesis said... [reply]

Coolboy? Gonna have to side w/Sean here. Spock kinda did it for me. (Words I never believed in life I'd say.)

Megan said... [reply]

Okay, McDonalds... gag.

Second, I'm actually jealous that you have already seen it. I remember staying up late at night (10:00 is late when you are 10) to watch Star Trek with my parents. They weren't Trekkies but they liked the show.

Also, Chris Pine = Hot

Also, there probably were some Nazis that didn't have their facts straight :) Your GH is very wise :)

Megan said... [reply]

Also, does your husband watch Battle Star Galactica? The new one ?? :) just curious

Lola said... [reply]

I was named after an X-men character, and if I were a boy, my name would be Logan Exavier. My dad is a nerd.

Science Teacher Mommy said... [reply]

L****???? Hell on Earth???? Those are just fighting words.

My brother and I did many Trek conventions. Live long and prosper, Nem.
