You might be a librarian if . . .

Goddessdivine had a hysterical "you might be a teacher if" list up on her blog, so I looked around online to see if there were any "you might be a librarian if" lists. This list was written by Danielle Dreger-Babbitt at Examiner.com. I decided to have a look and see if I feel it's accurate.

You might be a librarian if:

You compulsively reshelve items and straighten shelves when browsing at Barnes and Noble
(I actually do this at other libraries. When visiting Barnes & Noble or Borders, I have to throw all notions of organization, rightness, or sanity out the window before I even walk in. Otherwise I end up in a corner, rocking and drooling between shelves that make no earthly sense.)

You alphabetize your spice rack (and everything else)
(Ooooh, I know what I'm doing this weekend!)

You own more cardigans than shoes
(Not even true. Although I do love me a good cardi.)

You own cats named "Ernest, "Kerouac," or "Flannery."
(Excuse me, cats? Not if I don't want my breath sucked out while I sleep. I am, however, planning to give all my dogs, children, chickens, and baby lambs names from literature.)

You have a secret desire to be on a bookcart drill team
(Wow. Um, now I do.)

You know the Dewey Decimal System by heart
(No, no I don't. And it's really embarassing that I don't. I feel so out of it when I look at librarian t-shirts at Cafepress.)

Nancy Pearl is your idol and you own her action figure
(This was actually Daltongirl's going-away present as I left to go get my MLS)

You go on vacation and visit other libraries
(Especially if it's in Hawaii, and if I think I could maybe kill and hide one of the existing employees and then take their spot)

You don't have a Netflix account and borrow all of your music and movies from the library instead
(Well, yeah. You don't have to be a librarian to know that free = better.)

Your home library has just as many books as a small public library
(Not anymore. I now think of my public library as an extension of my home library. In most cases I don't need to own the book because I know they do. Different rules apply, however, to bathroom reading.)

You were totally blogging and social networking before 2003
(Sorry, wasn't that cool. But then, I wasn't a librarian then, either.)

You read banned books. (And so. should. everyone.)

This has me thinking about what I would put on my list. I think it will deserve its own blog post. Stay tuned . . .

I'm a librarian and I only qualify for two of these: Netflix and the banned books one.

I would *REALLY* like to see the shelving cart drill team. Really.

I'm confused . . . Who doesn't alphabetize their spice rack?

Just another reason Texas librarians are the best ;)

My husband doesn't do much of the cooking, so our spice rack is not that well-organized. But our books are. And we didn't have Netflix until he stopped working at the public library. It always amazes me how many people I meet who don't know that you can check movies out from the library.

WAit...this from the person who has their books arranged by color?

I really miss the awesome selection of music and movies from the Salt Lake County Library System. The Spanish Fork Library is totally podunk, and the BYU library, while awesome as an academic library, is not quite so awesome on entertainment.

I have a closet organization compulsion. I hate seeing things out of order and I do reorder books in public libraries. Bookstore organization makes my head explode. I embarrassingly don't know most of the K, KF system and I work in a law library. I don't have much of a clue about the Dewey decimal system and I hate when people give me Dewey Decimal jokes because I'm a librarian.

I fantasize about the BYU library and consider it my personal Mecca. But that probably has something to do with the fact that I've seen better city libraries than the university library I have to deal with now.

Haha.I guess I was not a very good librarian. (I do alphabetize all the fiction by author tho!) But I was only an archivist with a degree in history, so I never got all that Dewey Decimal humor. Now jokes about ephemera, I might find hilarious.

Let me know if you need another girl for the drill team.

now you make me want to buy that "i read banned books" bracelet again. thought i was over that temptation. oh well, i'll just recite elder hales four most caring words: "we can't afford it" and maybe put it on my christmas list. (truth be told, i just never could see all the book titles from the "signals" catalog that i saw it in. i didn't want to get the bracelet and then have a book i didn't like on it.)

You have alleviated one of my biggest library fears: I always stressed about checking my movies out from the library because I thought the librarians would think I was stupid and didn't read. But that IS why they're there... and why would I pay for something I can get for free!?

i did just get the bright idea to google that braclet. thankfully, they had "huck finn" and "to kill a mockingbird" on it, but they also had "go ask alice" and "annie on my mind." not sure i want to own it now. although i read "go ask alice" as a teen, can't say i loved the book and i just now read that it was a work of fiction, not real diary even though it was promoted as such. oh well. i would have much preferred "the grapes of wrath" or "lord of the flies."

I've never seen any DVD's at our library, only VHS's and who wants to watch those? No machine currently. Loved the drill team video. My faves are the books on CD. In the car. On the way back and forth to work. Love it. My most recent was The Last Juror by John Grisham. Cannot imagine reading it being near as good as this southern guy that sounded like Matthew Mac-can't spell his name so why try-nahy.

I'm not a librarian, but I definitely agree that Barnes & Noble's organization makes no sense. I always just end up wandering around. Also, I read banned books. I was surprised to see that D.H. Lawrence didn't make the list. I guess nobody who wants books banned reads him anymore.

I do have a Netflix account, but that's because I'm a film buff and our public library doesn't cut it. The only Dewey or LC numbers I know by heart are music, naturally, as a music librarian.

And now I really want to alphabetize my spice rack . . .

I knew I should have been a librarian! Jason mocks our alphabetized spice rack.

april, i created the banned books bracelets. the necklace doesnt have Go ask Alice and you can remove any link. i am developing with the ABFFE a second bracelet with, i hope, some book titles you listed. we need permission. stay tuned! if you are a librarian i'll be at ALA in Chicago selling them as a fundraiser for the FTRF. carolyn forsman.
