Lady of leisure

This is one of those weekends where I work Saturday instead of Friday (blah) but I'm determined to make the most of it. Which is why I will be doing the following today:

Watching Cranford. Has anybody here seen this? I've only watched the first episode so far and it is delicious. Plus it allows me to play my favorite game, which is called "Shriek the Name of That British Actor and the Names of the Other Films or Plays in Which You Have Seen Them." Extra points if you can do this before their faces come fully into focus. I tell you. Best. Game. Ever. Is especially fun for those sitting around you.

Knitting. Am finishing a baby sweater for the due-in-two-weeks addition to the Precii. As soon as the buttons are on I will take pictures and post them here. But ladies, I must warn you. It is quite likely that one or more of your ovaries will burst upon viewing. Guys, I really don't know what it will do to you. But be on the lookout for strange women running up and telling you that they just saw this one baby sweater on a blog and they need a baby NOW and could you please help out with that.

Eating clam chowder. I made a quite good clam chowder last night, taking me one step closer in my Quest for the Perfect Clam Chowder Recipe. Other quests include The Perfect Cobbler Recipe (done, thanks to Danalee) and The Perfect Pizza Dough Recipe (yeah, so not there yet).

Possibly showering. But only if I have time.

What would everyone here want to do on an enforced day of leisure?

Ugh, there are so many things I would like to do that haven't happened yet. Sleep. Eat good food. Not drive at all. Clean up the entire house without feeling like its work. Go on a hike. Go camping. Watch North and South. Not do any homework. Not go to work.
Although this would be a very full day of leisure, it would also be soooo refreshing!

I gotta be honest, I was having a seriously crappy day and that shout out completely lifted my spirits and sealed the fate of making cobbler tonight. I won't lie, it possibly means eating the batch alone on my couch while rocking in fetal position, but whose judging?

I need that cobbler recipe. Todat. I have a box of fresh cherries that are screaming at me and I'm feeding people tomorrow.

Today!

Umm...sleep? Play video games.

I JUST got Cranford from Netflix! Will definitely start watching it the next time Jason is out of the house.

My word verification is "cysts". Ew.

Janssen said... [reply]

Oh, Cranford is SO delightful! I loved every second of it. Especially Dr. Bingley.

I would probably be baking. It seems whenever I get bored, I start whipping up baked goods.

How about posting your clam chowder recipe?

I just ADORE your blog. And I ADORED Cranford! It's a dishy delight packed FULL of "name that celebrity" people. I didn't know it was an official game, but I always participate!

For fun? You should read Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Have you read it yet? I laughed and laughed. Very entertaining.

What any self-respecting grad student who is this close [] to graduation would do. Sleep and possibly watch/read mindless things and eat yummy food. Possibly go for a bike ride.

And speaking of yummy food, I'm seconding (or thirding, whatever) this request for the clam chowder recipe. My one and only attempt thus far has failed miserably.

I [heart] Dame Judy Dench.

Sleep, sit around, lay out by the pool, read, shop. Oh wait! I do this a lot lately because I'm a teacher on summer vacation! Yeah, good things don't always last.....

I'm asking for the cobbler recipe too...

I have your blog on my rss feed and it's very cute.

Also... what's cranford? I google searched it and didn't get any great results (which pissed me off to no end)

I see it's on "english" tv... and they're all dressed very english, prim and proper so I'd love love to see it if it's worth seeing.

Sleep in, go to brunch, hit the farmers market, read, watch a movie, bake something, and take a walk. I could add other items to the list, but these were the first things the came to mind...

I'm a silent viewer of your blog normally but the bit about the sweater made me snort. You are one funny lady.

I have the perfect clam chowder recipe.

I really do.

Valli said... [reply]

I don't know about "perfect", but I have a pizza dough recipe that Dave drools over. Along with requesting it once a week he'll even do the dishes that night. If you would like to try it let me know.

I cried when Cranford was over. Cried. Sobbed. No! It can't be over. I want it to go on forever! But it didn't. Such a good show.

So, you play that game, too? My husband just gets annoyed with me. I have to run up and check imdb.com after every show we watch. Glad to know I'm not the only one. :)

And really, my clam chowder (or should I say my rendition of the Market Street Grill's clam chowder) is soooo good. I'll e-mail you the recipe.

This seems like as good a time as any to shoot a couple books your way: protochicklit The Dud Avacado and newly indie-published Gravity vs. the Girl. I think I still know your taste well enough.

Keith and I had today off, too, and we hit the Texas Wine Trail. (hic)

Is JUDI DENCH (insert scream) in everything? I mean, she even makes it into James Bond more often than Pierce Brosnan. Plantboy is having a male weekend out of town right now; I'm thinking that BBC's Sense and Sensibility is in order tonight, unless Bridget Jones is on TV again.

Is it a little hot for clam chowder? Or not, it IS your day after all.

Two of my friend's kids work at an Italian restaurant. One day they accidentally made too much pizza dough and ended up bringing a batch home. Their mother has been hounding them ever since to reveal the recipe for that dough because the pizzas were PERFECT. They are totally not allowed to reveal it because it's a trade secret. Excruciating.

(I'll get back to you if we ever find out. I'm pretty sure that you making pizza at home in Utah isn't going to affect their restaurant income in Australia. :) )

I thoroughly enjoyed Cranford!

Yeah, Spitfire, that does sound like a pretty full day. Not very leisurly . . .

Danalee, any time! Especially since my life has been blessed so by the cobbler recipe.

Sorry mom. I forgot to get this to you. My bad.

Perfectly reasonable, J. My dad got on me about how I was spending my free day inside, but it was flipping 100 degrees out there! How is being outside in that fun??

Nemesis said... [reply]

Kelly, you will love it.

Janssen, yes. It IS delightful.

Kim: Mmmmm . . . baking.

Will do, LibPhoto!

Hiccup MeL, I read P&P&Z and giggled the whole time. So funny!

Amandastretch, wait no longer. I will post it!

Elise, she was great in this.

Goddessdivine, way to suck! Except I don't really envy what you'll be doing once you go BACK to work, so I guess it's fair . . .

Melissa, I'll post the cobbler recipe. And Cranford is a BBC production that aired on Masterpiece Theatre a couple of years ago. You should be about to get it through Netflix or your library. It's long (almost 5 hours) but so good.

Nemesis said... [reply]

Emandtrev, I'm with you on the farmers markets. Can't wait til the one near me starts up . . .

Emily, thank you! I know sometimes I cross the line into gross territory. So I'm glad I made someone laugh. :-)

Azucar, you must give that thing to me, I think.

Valli, let's have it! I'll absolutely try it.

Okay, CJohnsonia. I'm really glad I wasn't the only one. Because no lie I started sobbing at the end when _____ appears from ______. That's when I was really glad I was watching it alone. Also I had to go check imdb during the first episode because Jem the handyman's face was driving me eyes-scratching-out-INSANE. And when sweet imdb told me that he played St. John Rivers in Jane Eyre I could be calm again. Please, email away your recipe!

Th, am requesting them now!

Beckyw, way to make me giggle. I hope it was a great day.

Seriously, Chosha! See if they'll make an exception for Yanks!

STM, it WAS too hot for clam chowder but I just really wanted it. And I stayed inside until it cooled down.

HAH, I'm so glad. It's awesome.

This is the first time I've posted on your blog. Cranford is probably one of the best movies to play your game in. My mom and I play it and didn't even realize what a game it would be to other people. I liked cranford, but not as much as North and South and Wives and Daughters. Have fun!

Bridget said... [reply]

My favorite line in Cranford is when Judi Dench rolls a ball beneath her bed and says "All is well. There is no man concealed there." I try to find opportunities to do/say that whenever I can.

Recently some friends of mine found an Elizabeth Gaskell boxed set of DVDs at Costco that has North & South, Wives & Daughters, and Cranford in it. For under $30. Thought I would pass that information along to you and all your Gaskell-reading, BBC-loving, readers.

LOVED Cranford. Am very surprised that you have not seen yet--I am sure you will love it and will also love winning your game. The part involving the beloved cow was quite amusing. Tonight I will be watching MYSTERY staring Julia McKenzie as Miss Marple, she was one of the actresses in Cranford and she is excellent.

Have you tried Miss Hass's pizza dough?

Audra said... [reply]

I am going to have to check that out when I have time... having time is the key! But I love those movies! I have the A&E Boxed set with Pride and Prejudice (the 8 hour version), Lorna Doone, ... etc. etc. Love it!

I have a very good pizza dough recipe, if you want it! Part of the secret is to use semolina flour and bread flour.

As for me, I'd stay in bed and read every day if my muscles wouldn't atrophy.
