See?? THIS. This is why I did not want to turn 30!

GH and I both turned 30 this fall. Except I did it a month earlier than him because I am 1) competitive, and 2) a cougar.

For me, counting down to 30 was fine. Piece of cake. GH approached it with a bit more trepidation and apparently he had the right idea. Because since we reached the triple digits, we have both started falling completely apart. First GH's back decided to just quit working. It's most likely brought on by stress, working the graveyard shift, and working the graveyard shift on really crappy chairs. The poor guy can barely get up and down and is using me as a pulling-self-up-on tool. And a poor one at that, if this morning's pained " grumble grumble useless grumble" mutter is to be believed. He is now wishing that someone thought to give him a cane for his birthday. For my part, about the day after my birthday I turned into an insane(r) person who didn't really feel like doing anything (see: blogging, cleaning, being nice to people, etc.). Come to find out I'm having a problem with mah thy-roid. So, you know, will be getting that figured out. Also I'm coming down with a cold and woke up this morning feeling as though someone were trying to slit my throat from the inside.

So after GH got home from work we're both lying in bed moaning and groaning (and no, not in the good way) over our various ailments while we also tried vainly to be sympathetic, comforting people to each other. It was pretty pathetic. Welcome to 30.

That's probably why they kick you out of the singles wards after your 30th year. They don't want the fresh 18-year-olds to be freaked out by all of us stumbling around with walkers and losing teeth and limbs right and left.

Ageists.

I didn't really feel much when I turned 30, but this fall, on the advent of my 31st, my back started giving me problems and I am walking like an old person. Also, the YSA ward here is not kicking me out but in return I remain the RS president.

Not to rain on your old-person parade, but you're still 70 years away from hitting triple digits.

Yes, I figured that one out nearly four years ago. Seriously; it's like your body knows it's 30 and decides to freak out on you. My body went to pot. And sad thing is.....we have how many years left on this planet?

Yeah. The resurrection looks better every day.

Try being 32 and having had 3 kids...Things just aren't the same.

Yeah, that three-digit thing, I was like, um . . . you're not 100 yet. But hey, maybe your math skills are also on their way out. :)

Thyroid problems are pretty much a guarantee for me, so while they haven't hit yet, I'm preparing myself.

I have my thyroid checked whenever I have blood work done because of a family history. That one is definitely better caught early.

I've had a major hospital incidence every year since I was 17. But since turning 30 I've had a 10 month thumb injury (yes, my thumb, I injured it taking down Christmas decorations, in January), an overly tight leg ligament, and a very memorable trip to the ER for my very first kidney stone (our scale of how enjoyable an activity would be now has kidney stone at the bottom and dinner in Paris at the top, we're usually in the middle). This is a little much for one year.

For my birthday this year, I asked Doug for some calcium supplements. Yep...that's what you have to look forward to at 31.

So I heard the other day (and no, please don't ask me where I heard this because I don't remember and thus it probably wasn't credible) that a woman doesn't really start to age until after she has given birth. So, you know, hold on to that immortal youth and beauty while you still have it. ;)

Oh, honey, I won't even warn you about 40 or 50 . . .

I don't know whether to be afraid, very afraid, or whether to laugh in scorn. I'm 29, with only 3 1/2 months to go until the 3rd decade mark. But I already have such bad knees I can barely kneel down, some sort of heart arrhythmia that I really ought to see the doctor about and I just got my first pair of glasses. They're cute glasses, though.

Sad thing is, I don't look like I'm in nearly that bad of shape at all, so people always look surprised when I say, "Ow owowowowowowow," when I kneel for some unavoidable reason.

You crack me up! Yes, your metabolism absolutely STOPS when you turn 25 (or earlier). Your body does start to fall apart when you hit 30, so you really have to start taking care of it. I don't even WANT to know what happens when I hit 40 next month.....

I'm actually jealous that you're having thyroid problems. I'd LOVE to be able to take a pill and get more energy and lose weight. :-) Hope you get that figured out soon!

I would be feeling rather superhuman right now, given the glorious health I experienced during my 30s, if it were not for the fact that I'm now over 40 and pretty much falling apart in most of the ways you and everyone else has described. *sigh*

I turn 30 in December. It suddenly hurts to walk when I get up in the morning... so, totally know what you are talking about!

This is completely true about 30. I started getting vertigo spells (and was repeatedly told it was more common in old people) and other stuff too delicate to discuss here. My husband started having digestive issues. He just had his first colonoscopy at age 31! And he's injured his back like a bazillion times in the last couple years.

My current old lady pains are most likely attributable to being eight months pregnant and I've been expecting those to go away, but now Lady Susan's got me worried.

I loved turning 30. Here are the perks: more money than in my 20s, smarter decisions, more opportunities cause I'm no longer the kid, newer adventures, more established relationships, and the reminder that I still have more decades to go. Enjoy being 30. Its all about your mental state, and mine is the equivalent of a teenager in my wonder of the world.

Let's talk fifties here. For one thing, they ain't half bad!!! And I hear sixties are even better!!! But I'm putting all my chips on the 90's. If you knew my 94 year old friend Virtue, you'd petition to pass right there!!!! It's ALL good!!! Except I miss my eyes... And I've just about given up hopes of puberty and the breasts I never got...Some dreams must die nobly.

What's with librarians and hypothyroid? I've been on thyroid drugs since I was 19 and now that I hit 32 my dosage had to increase. Ick. My metabolism started slowing down at 27 and I actually had to start exercising to maintain my weight (I NEVER exercised). What's with that? I think mentally we're all 25but the body says otherwise.

Oh, underactive thyroid is totally awful. Find the best endocrinologist you can! Don't just go through your GP. And I use a combination of Levoxyl (or Synthroid) and Cytomel, which is a T4 replacement. Don't just take the "oh, your numbers look fine," line if you truly don't feel well. Oh, and exercise helps.

And can you tell me of some good yarn stores in Utah? I am going there for two weeks and even though I am bringing a project, I may want some other needles. Thanks!

My husband has been clinging to his current hairstyle with the defence that it keeps him looking young. I disagree. I'm also his hairdresser. I'll leave it to you to imagine the "lively discussion" that takes place before each trim. That's right, we're too stingey to send him to a hairdresser, yet too foolish to learn from history. I tell myself 30 is when celebrities seem to start getting all the attention - it must be a human's prime! SURELY!

I love my thirties. I mean the physical stuff isn't as great, but my emotional state is finally stable.
