And that, friends, is what we call compromise

My parents are going to Kauai in 10 days, to the same place we went two years ago. They invited GH and me to come stay with them, way back when they first decided to go. And I said (squealed) yes and saved the money to buy plane tickets. But it eventually became apparent that GH would not be able to get the time off work, and we had to bail out. I told myself I would be fine, but then this IM conversation with my dad happened 3 days ago.

Dad: So what's up with you?

me: Nadda lot. Am making plans for a fun March. If I can make it through March I might not kill anybody. February looks okay so far.

Dad: My Feb is about to get A LOT better. 2 weeks baby.

me: . . . . yeah. I can't actually think about that. Because I'm about 30 minutes from just booking myself a ticket anyway. At which point [GH] will run out and buy himself a new TV. So, you know, that's where we would end up.

Dad: Understandable, but you end up winning twice; him only once.

me: Good point. Maybe I SHOULD just do it . . . So what are you guys going to do once you get there?

Dad: Are you kidding?

me: I want to visualize it. Costco trip? Steaks & shrimp?

Dad: LAY ON THE BEACH!

me: No, like step by step. Check in, head to the beach, watch the sun set while the whales frolick . . .

Dad: DO A HELICOPTER ISLAND TOUR. EAT WONDERFUL FOOD. BE WARM.

Dad: NOT SHOVEL SNOW.

me: Ice cream at Lappert's, starry skies . . .

Dad: YES, YES, YES.

me: Sigh . . . . yeah. It's going to be amazing.

Dad: There is that potential. Yes.

me: Sigh. You'll have to tell me which ice creams you eat. And how many whales you see. And if Kee beach is still great.

Dad: If?

me: And how the helicoptor tour is.

Dad: You can still come you know.

me: WAH!!!!! sniffle sob

Aaaaand the next morning I booked a ticket.

GH and I talked it over first, and it turns out that he is quite fine with me going on vacation without him. The part where he gets to spend his plane ticket money on a schmancy new TV sweetened the deal, I think. At first I wondered if this makes me some sort of brat for ditching my husband to go get spoiled by my parents. But the more I think about it the more I realize that this actually is a win-win, since GH and I both get the thing that we really, really want the most. (And it's also my version of win-win, wherein I do kind of win twice.)

Oh, malasadas? Your lover is coming to you.

Yes, you do have one the best dad's on earth. See you in 10 days. (I will stow away that blender thing for you in my suitcase, but don't tell anyone!) hehe

I travel without my husband all the time. He hates, HATES to travel. I could drag him along, and then we'd both be miserable. Or I could go and be happy, and he could stay and be happy. Win-win.

If you're husband isn't feeling left behind, than I think it's a great idea! You'll have to post lots of pictures!

My husband just spent a week in Seattle for work meetings (and lots of nice wining and dining) while I was 38 weeks pregnant, so now I have leverage. Maybe I should work a trip to Hawaii--we haven't been for two years and I'm missing it badly.

I was there last weekend! The weather was sooo nice! And, the hardest part was NOT going into Kauai bakery and knocking over little old ladies for malasadas!

As a single girl, I firmly maintain that if I were ever to get married I would NOT not do fun things just because my husband couldn't/wouldn't do them with me. Kudos to you for going anyway! Also, you're totally the winner here. Hawaii AND a huge new TV? I wish I were you...

Ahh. Seriously, so ENVIOUS. Please share pics so I can enjoy the warm beach life vicariously through you!

Aw, man, I'm jealous too of you and your Hawaii trips. When're you going? Have fun. Soak in enough sun for the both of us.

You know what I think of you, and that is independent of buying a ticket to Hawaii. I was originally going to post the word I call you but I have a 5 year old checking over my shoulder telling me not to write naughty words to the internet.

I am off to Vegas this week to be warm during winter vacation while my husband audits for 80 hours a week at work. That would be what I call a win-lose.

sounds like a reasonable compromise to me. Have fun!

The woman with a Hawaiian themed ice cream shop has never been to Hawaii... :::sob:::... but I do play a mean Ukulele so that makes up for it! (oh, and thank you lucky stars I did not pick that one up Freshman year... our whole hall including you would have probably KILLED me. Oooo... off the subject!

I have only taken small little trips without Levi... to Virginia or the mountains... and usually I have a kid with me (a birth mother visit) but that is vacation compared to the chaos at home. I think you guys have reached a terrific compromise... sounds win/win. Have fun... absense makes the heart grow fonder ;)!

Oh, I'm jealous. I love Hawaii. But I do also love our big, fancy, HD TV, so you really are getting the best of both worlds. :) By the way, I started a blog for John and myself, in case you're interested. Now you won't have to travel all the way to Nevada to catch up with us. Ha.

Hey, whatever works! We have taken separate trips many times over the years. Now that the kids are gone, I prefer to travel with the GH, but if I go to visit my dad it's just less stressful to have the hub along. One less person to keep happy, you understand. Have a wonderful time!

This reminds me of an old Eddie Murphy skit...

You sent your woman off
to the romantic Bahamas by herself?

By herself to the Bahamas?

She's walking on the beach,
she laid out all day and got a tan,
your woman is fine
and got her body looking right,
she's walking on the beach, in the Bahamas.

Lovers on the beach in love.
She's all by herself, walking along, feeling sad, thinking about you and everybody's real romantic.
The motion of the ocean
is shimmying off...
The moon is shimmying off the ocean.
Your woman's standing, looking at it and crying.
And all of a sudden,a dude named Dexter walks up.

Dexter St. Jock.

He walk up swinging.

Then he do that smooth
Bahamas thing on your woman.

"What a beautiful girl like you doing by herself on the island of love?

"This is the island for lovers.

"You should be being held
right now, girl.

"What you crying about?"

"I'm thinking about my boyfriend, so I came down here
to think it over."

"Tell me what hotel
your man's staying. I tell him that you treat a woman like you like a princess.

"lf you were my woman,I make love to you constantly!

Well, he's back in New York."

"ls that right?

"Well, listen, girl. Won't you
come back around my place?

"We sit down and talk it over."

"All we gonna do is talk?"

He take your woman to his house
and roll one of them big-ole Bahama joints.
Put some of that Bob Marley music on.

And y'all know Bob
be preaching.

Don't let him fool you
Oh, no
Or even try to school you
Oh, yeah

Could this be love?
And be loved

Swinging.

Next thing you know,
Dexter is doing your woman.

Well.

Send your woman home
floating on air.

Walk through the door like this:
I shot the sheriff

We so stupid, we think it
was the weather. We be going:

"Hey, baby, you need
to get away more often."

:)

Ennnnggghhhh. I spent the weekend seriously entertaining the idea of booking a ticket as well and coming with you and leaving Sean to cope with the kids for a week. I mean, I'd be invited right? I wasn't too much trouble last time, was I? Also, it'd be like old times!
And then fiscal responsibility hit me like a brick wall and also the fact that Sean has to, oh yeah, go to work and so the kids would probably get taken away by CPS while I was gone. So yeah. As exciting as the prospect was, I won't be seeing you there. Love it for me!

Right now I'm thinking of Utah the way you are thinking about Hawaii. Although I'm truly am jealous you are going to Kauai. Utah is so much warmer now than freezing cold DC and even better I'll be there next week.

Props to the hub for being awesome. He deserves all kinds of leis for his generosity.

Sounds like a plan to me. Hope it's an awesome trip.

PS...with his sunnies on your dad looks like an extra from the Sopranos.
