Stitchin' and Bi---um, I mean . . .

Today I got to celebrate the sudden arrival of fall by sprinting across a store parking lot with Little Lord Voldemort in the driving sleet. I was there to buy socks, because it turns out that humans require foot coverings in winter.

BUT. I'd just finished this baby 15 minutes earlier, so at least the top part of him was prepared for the elements:

YEAH.

Pretty much the cutest thing I've ever seen. The hat isn't bad either.

This should have been a quick project, but the yarn I had was bulky rather than worsted weight, so I had to rewrite the entire pattern so as not to wind up with a candy corn hat so huge that I would have to pass it off as an ironic birthday present for GH. Or a giant. This is what you parents and teachers and responsible citizens can tell kids when they whine about math not being useful. When they grow up and want to be really cool and take up knitting, boom. There's your math right there.

Even though I followed the pattern's measurements, it's a bit small. So I may give this one away and make a bigger one for Charlie Brown here.

In other knitting news, I finally cracked down and finished a project my mom commissioned from me about a year ago. She wanted something similar to a shrug she found at Nordstrom but didn't want to pay $148 for it. She's cheap like that.

Eileen Fisher Mohair Infinity Wrap

Instead she bought some really nice yarn, gave it to me, and then I had a baby and my brain melted. With her being in town for the last little while, I renewed my motivation (read: felt really really guilty). I couldn't find an exact pattern so based it off of Stefanie Japel's Paris Loop, and here's the finished result:

And because the lady at the yarn store sold her more yarn than she would actually need, I have a bit left over and am thinking about something to keep little Spitfire warm in Kansas. Right now I'm eyeing this:

Anybody else have any fall projects they are excited about?

Shut the front door. That candy corn hat?!?! That is amazing.

My project is going to be canning applesauce like mad... I'm shooting for 30 quarts in one day. It's ambitious, but I'm hopeful.

Nice hat.

Anon, you just made me shriek with laughter. And then I had to delete your comment because if my mom saw it there's no way she would ever wear the shrug again and I did NOT do all that work for that!

You are bad . . .

I guess I better not tell your mom the comment from Anon that I read before you deleted.

Yeah, you'd better not.

Wait....you have a child and you still find time to knit?!! How is this possible?

Nemesis said... [reply]

Lady Susan, I spent all of his naps knitting (and after he was in bed) and just didn't do anything else. My house this morning looked like something had been detonated inside it. Not a schedule I can really keep up . . .

So did you get five million comments from strangers at the store about how cute the hat was??? It is adorable!

so now I want to know what the comment was! hee hee...guess I can ask cooldad :)

Is your son the cutest little guy ever??!

The truth is, I have never wanted to knit until I started watching your blog. You have tempted me my friend. Tempted. Shame on you.

Aw, thanks deerhollow! Sometimes his expressions actually remind me of your little Liam--is that weird? :-)

Bridget, I did get a compliment at the checkout. Mostly I think people just looked at him and thought, "It's snowing outside! Why are this child's feet bare?!?"

I probably should have just left the comment up, but what anonymous said was that in the 2nd picture of my mom's shrug it kind of looked like lady parts. So, um, Mom? I know I'm the one who arranged it for the picture, but don't wear the shrug like that.

Yes! I tempted someone! I take the shame! Pianochick, I promise it's lots of fun. It can even be very meditative and soothing as long as you are not having to do math at the same time.

If you do decide you want to learn, my advice would be to take a class. You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration by learning the right way in the beginning!

He's a candy corn. That is just about the most precious thing I've ever seen.

That was the first thought.

The second was that the same pattern, flesh-colored, would look like a breast.

That hat is the cutest! And the baby's even cuter!
