Blah to packing. Blah.
Have packed 13 boxes. Only have about 60 more to go, whee!!
One thing I am quite pleased about with this move is that we are sticking with the decision we made in the middle of the last move, which was that the next time we do this we are going to hire professionals. Not that it isn't really kind of us to give all our friends and family members such frequent opportunities for service and blessings, but really. We can't be everything to everyone, you know?
So, sorry. I will not be luring any of you to my home with the promise of Little Caesars's pizza and lukewarm root beer. If you want those things, you will have to go pay $8 and get them yourself. I know it's more fun to get them for free after hours of back-twisting labor on a hot Saturday, but this is just the way it has to be.
Have scheduled the movers for June 16th, as that's the day we can get into the house we are renting. There will be an entire post about the house coming, but for now I will say that I am so excited I kind of can't stand it. I currently live in an 800 square foot apartment. The house is 1900. The math here = awesome. It is possible that I might be able to become a clean, clutter-free sort of person once I have room to put my stuff.
And no, I can't just declutter. I have a kid. Kids come with entire circus trains of necessary junk. I only have the basics and it's still quite the shload. I can't get rid of any of it because I know I'll need it all again--unless, of course, I decide to stop procreating now while I already have one practically perfect angel baby from heaven. (That frantic banging sound you hear is GH knocking on every piece of wood within reach because I bet he thinks I jinxed us just now. Neener.)
Okay. Packing. Am going to pack some more. Except first I will need to eat some of the banana walnut bread I just made in order to use up all the black bananas from the freezer. Then I will pack. I do need to pack, because going through and touching each of our possessions might be the only way I will find my tinted moisturizer. And the phone charger. And my American Express card. You know, little things.

Okay, so I'm a bit compulsive about making lists, but I made a LONG list of everything in every room of the house that needed to be packed and then portioned it all out for the two or three weeks before the move. Like, I could pack extra blankets and winter coats first, but our pillows and toothbrushes not until the very end. That way I had a very clear idea of which things had to be done each day and a finish line so I didn't get too overwhelmed.
Podcasts, for me. And a musical soundtrack for when I can't stand another word of This American Life/RadioWest/NPR.
I dream of the day we can hire professional movers. Although I don't mind moving day so much as I do mind the endless packing and repacking.
Good luck!
I had to have a book on tape or something similar when we moved. Otherwise I just sort of stood there and looked at my stuff and then looked at my boxes and then looked at my stuff..repeat forever and ever. My hands don't pack things unless my mind can be elsewhere!
Good luck. I do not envy the task before you.
Having a hard time feeling bad about you having to pack. You are moving to LOGAN for crying out loud. I'd pack a thousand boxes. Maybe I will see you some time. Desmama and I often manage to get together when I come for visits in the summer.
2 years ago we moved from a 1000 square foot apartment into an 1800 square foot house (plus half-finished basement) and I thought, "There will never be clutter again!" Yeah. Well, it's better, but we have kind of just expanded to fill the space.
But don't get me wrong, it is MUCH better. And I'm sure for the first several months, you'll be able to stave off that expansion a little bit.
Good luck! I can't wait to see pictures of the house (says the girl who stalks houses on Zillow for fun)
Oh, also, professional movers. We also used them for the first time during our last move and they are AMAZING! I think they are pretty much worth their weight in gold.
Jason was supervising the whole thing while I slaved away at work and he later reported, with a bit of awe in his voice, how they just hoisted the couch up and out of the apartment without the need to do the complex mathematical calculations that were necessary when we brought the couch up the stairs and into the apartment.
I just moved twice in six weeks because I'm a glutton for punishment. :) I didn't hire professionals because hey it's just me, but I paired down a lot of stuff. As aggravating as craigslist and the church listserv was, I got rid of a lot of stuff and I got some cash. It was so nice to not worry about moving big things. Also I packed over two weeks. It helped me sort out a lot of stuff that I hadn't tossed in previous moves. I took my peeps out for cheap Indian buffet because I didn't want to cook and they were happy with good food. I'm classier than Little Ceasers.
As for entertainment, I got addicted to of all things geanelogy shows. They are no brainers but entertaining. I even learned some stuff to help me with my own family history. You don't have to look at them. Also I listened to Masterpiece theatre online but you might get distracted about seeing the hotness of Sherlock Holmes again. I also had NPR going and General Conference because I moved during that weekend.
If you love Excel, number your boxes and then have the list over in Excel or Google Docs. It may come in handy also when doing an insurance claim in the future.
I think the cleaning was worse for me than the actual move. I steam cleaned the carpet. It was worth it.
Good luck! Can't wait to see what the house looks like.
Oh, I feel for you about the tornado of baby stuff. It's impossible to control, isn't it?
Don't forget a "need immediately" box to come with you in the car, with paper towels and toilet paper and the baby's lovey (and, if you're me, the coffee maker) to be carried in the car with you, instead of in the moving truck.
Congrats on the new relocation/job/house! Also, I saw that you won the Coastal Kids book from the Never Not Knitting blog! I'm jealous.
You know, you can definitely ask for some help if you’re really having a hard time. I know you’re struggling with packing (you still have 60 boxes left to fill!) Call your closest friends and ask help from them. I’m sure they’ll be willing to lend a hand. If they can’t, there are self-storage companies who can offer you efficient service to make your move less difficult. :D I hope it’s not too late though.
