Bread makes you fat???

Have started trying to get this baby weight (and the last baby's weight) off, which is a delight. Things I have been doing:

1. Borrowing my mom's jeans, and also finding a pair of my usual Old Navy jeans in a bigger size at Deseret Industries for $4. (Note to self: Always check DI first for jeans, because I'm going to wear the knee out of the $4 ones just as fast.)

2. Bundling up the kids and taking them for walks. I went one day and my lungs were burning by the time I got home. Thought it was because I was out of shape but really it was because there was an inversion and I was doing the equivalent of sucking on an exhaust pipe. The other day we had the worst air in the country. Since then I've been checking and just about every day is a bad air day. So much for nature.

All bundled up and ready to go breathe him some cancer!

Fell asleep in the baby carrier. I cannot get over his lashes.

Remember my dream house that I will never be able to afford?
This was in front of it. In-sane. For scale, those noses are made of traffic cones.

3. Letting Jillian Michaels shout at me while I try not to throw up. Am alternating between 30 Day Shred and 6 Week Six-Pack and the one called Start Putting on Your Workout Clothes Only to Discover You Tweaked Your Back Out While You Slept Last Night So I Guess Never Mind. The only time I can work this in is during the morning when Loki is asleep and the Dark Lord is rotting his brain learning to read in front of the telly. I tell you though, I can feel now that there is something happening underneath my tummy fat besides my ribs. And that's a nice feeling. Plus, sometimes I have company:

4. Tracking my food and exercise on that My Fitness Pal app. If anybody else uses it and wants to friend me on there, my username is sjwestern. Except I think it's freakishly hard to look people up on that thing so my feelings won't be hurt if no one does. It is actually motivating to me, reading what everyone else is up to. "So and so lost 783 calories doing an hour of Zumba." "This chick burned 823 calories pulling cars up a hill." Because then I think, "Yeah, I'll just eat less today." I'm going to go try out a Zumba class this week, because there's nothing so fun and effective as standing confused in the middle of a bunch of stomping, gyrating women.

5. I did finally get back into my jeans, though. Rejoice with me! And yes, I still have to do the rubber band trick and may need to for the next while, but I'll take it. And now my sweet mom can have her jeans back.

Has anybody else worked out anything that actually helps you eat better and get in shape? I'd love any tips you have for me!

ps. I've linked in the sidebar to my Pinterest and Instagram accounts, since I bet that's where a lot of us are spending all that time we should be using to exercise or write a novel or solve world hunger.

Amelia, you read my mind! I've been wanting to do yoga and wondered which online classes/podcasts are good. So thanks!

Ooh, I want online yoga!

I have big weight-losing plans once I get out of this tiny apartment and into a proper home. At which point I might friend you on MyFitnessPal. You've been warned.

I made myself a "Show Me the Money" workout challenge. If I workout less than 3 days a week, I owe $10. (Money to be paid via a gift card mailed to a random friend. It's service that way, right?) If I workout 3, 4, or 5 days a week, I break even. If I workout 6 days a week, I get $10 to spend on/save for any random purchases I would feel guilty purchasing otherwise.

I'm ridiculously stingy so I think it will definitely keep me above the 3 days/week and I've got a wish list for the 6 days/week. (Too bad I'd need to workout 6 days/week for about 5 months to afford the things I really want.)

I'm doing a Couch to 5k, Sworkit (for the lazy days when I want workout while watching Netflix) and Insanity (for the unrealistically motivated days). I use the Lose It app for meal/exercise tracking.

Stop eating simple carbs and any dairy that isn't low fat. I don't know how to get you to do that though unless your baby screams at you or you get violently ill afterward.

HIGH FIVE TO LOSING CLOTHING SIZES!

OH! ALSO, Another way is to spend like 2 hours a day exercising so that you're too tired to eat or cook. But that's less fun.

No magical advice here. Congrats for sticking with it. Love Henry's workout leggings. I think I had a pair just like them in the 80's.

@Liz Johnson

Liz, I look forward to the friending! And to you having a proper home, of course.

@Anne M

Holy COW, Anne! That is all really impressive. Must go check that stuff out, if only to shake my head at how hard core you are.

@Jenny

Jen, I'm pretty much steering clear of the simple carbs, and I think all my dairy is lowfat except for cheese. (Mmmm . . . cheese.)

@Cathy

Hi, Mom! His leggings are extra great because they double as pajamas.

I just want to say that I love the Dark Lord's power stance. It's all in the stance.

Excellent title from a great movie.

@Rachael

Rachael, he's trying to do side lunges with me. But yeah, check out how his knee does NOT extend over the toe! Kid's got it.

@Jason

Aaaaand Jason is the winner! I have to confess that there are parts of Scott Pilgrim that just drag for me, but that line was the best.

I'm doing the online yoga right now too. My favorite at the moment is the Yoga Solution series with Tara Stiles from Live Strong Woman. The routines are pretty short and there are some for people like me who are not very bendy.

@Steve

Hi, Steve! Anything for non-bendy people is RIGHT up my alley. Will check it out. Also, this is random but a lady in my ward did this demonstration with a digital pressure cooker and it made me think of you and MBC and your bottling adventures. The digital kind doesn't seem as terrifying!

MBC said... [reply]

Okay so really that was me, not Steve. Must remember to log him out in future.

Nemesis said... [reply]

@MBC

HEE! And here I was, all impressed that Steve does yoga.

It helps that it was delivered by George Michael.

Good for you! You might not want to hear this, but cutting out almost all sugar was life changing for me. (And all processed food too--but that is because we can't eat gluten, corn, or soy).

Also, you were the one who hooked me on to yogatoday.com. Way back in the day when they were free. I still think Adi is the yoga goddess. I try to do that once a week, run once a week, and then bike (we own a spin bike) once a week. And that is about as much time as I can eek out.

My fitness pal helped me lose a couple of pounds before I got pregnant. I mostly used it to track my eating and snack-triggers - it was eye opening to say the least. Now that I am officially not breast feeding anymore (can I get a "what what!!) I believe I will log back in and get it going again.

Zumba. Ok. There are people who can and should do Zumba. And there are people who shouldn't. I am one of the latter. And to be truthful, I can't get a good workout in when I am struggling to figure out steps with my two left feet. That is why I swear by the conditioning classes at the Logan rec center. Cheap, fun - a great workout, and NO coordination necessary.

@Lady Susan

Lady Susan, you are right. I DON'T want to hear it. ;-) Except you are ALSO right in that it would probably only do me good once the withdrawal was over. And color me impressed at your yoga/running/spinning schedule!

@Missy W.

Missy, "What What!" And as far as Zumba is concerned, I'm really hoping that confusion burns calories.
