scarred for life

I have a little scar on my chin. I'm not sure how visible it is to other people. I usually don't notice it because I'm busy crying in despair over the huge zit that has cropped up somewhere near it.

I got this scar the day after Christmas 1990. I was riding my bike to the BX (Base Exchange) to buy the movie Ghost, since I didn't get it for Christmas. Note to Mom and Dad: good call on not buying me such a dumb movie. My gift that year was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Because that was my other favorite movie in 1990. I liked the footage of England, I thought Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman were cool, and I had a mad hot crush on Christian Slater.

England = still beautiful
Alan Rickman = still cool
Morgan Freeman = still cool
Christian Slater = now resembles a rodent. And he has anger management problems. At least I can pick 3 out of 4. And I get points for knowing even then that Kevin Costner's accent was crap.

I stopped by the library on my way to the BX and as I pulled away I ran through some sand. Both the bike and I slammed into the ground, with me landing on the bottom. I then skidded on my face for a few feet and stopped just short of a parked car. I crawled out from under the bike and hobbled into the library to call my parents. Both librarians jumped about a foot in the air when they saw me, and when they sent me to the bathroom to clean up I saw why: The entire right side of my face was scraped up and covered with gravel. Lucky for me I only ended up with a little scar, but that mess looked gross for a long time.

We couldn't get through to my parents, so one of the librarians drove me home. Which is just one more story about why librarians are good people who deserve millions of dollars. Which they would then use to help the poor and mangled.

So. Best scar stories. Let's hear 'em! I should say now that if anyone's story involves a shark then they will probably win.

I have a scar on my knee from when I biffed it on Las Vegas Blvd...walking with my mom to The Wynn, and my Louis Vuitton bag went sprawling across the street.

It was AW-FUL.

If you were old enough to have a LV bag, it must've been bad. I hate falling in public as an adult.

I don't even remember that happening to you, sis. Bummer.

I was riding my little sister's bike down a big hill and hit sand or dirt or gravel or something when I was 7 and ate it. My knees were both totally scabbed over and it hurt to walk and we went to a carnival and my knees hurt real bad and it was totally miserable. Still have scars on my ugly knees.

I scar everyone I meet. Emotionally, I mean.

My best scar came when I threw a broken bottle at my brother. It hit him, but it didn't injure him. He picked up another piece of glass and threw it at me hitting me just below the eye.

I got stitches--which is fairly traumatic for a three (3) year old because you have to watch them come toward your eye with a huge needle--and we blamed it all on the neighbor kid who got a beating...

word verification: fgginots. Strange, that's the sound I make when I sneeze

I once got a scar from burning my neck with a curling iron. I looked like I had a hickey for three weeks.

I was such a nerd in high school that I broke into the school during Christmas break so I could get books out of my locker and do homework. On the way back over the tall wire fence my tummy got caught on the top wire and slit my tummy about five inches. Afterwards, while laying there on the ground bleeding I looked to the top wire of the fence and saw a five inch worm-like strand of my skin hanging there!!

My brother has the best story. We were out walking as a family and he took off running, turned around to us and said "Bet I can beat you!!" Then turned back around just in time to run head on into the stop sign pole and break his nose.

Alright, so just had to comment:

In the 3rd grade, I was walking to the playground with my friend when she suddenly stopped to tie her shoe. I tripped on her arm, and faceplanted in the cement. My face was full of misc scabs for quite some time. And it hurt. I was left with a small scar on my forehead.

Falling as an adult is definitely the worst. At age 20 my sister was working out at the gym on the treadmill. And fell. And kept on falling repeatedly. Everyone just watched. Her knees were very bloody. A few days later she discovered that she was hypoglycemic and her knees are scarred to comemorate the event.

TMF--Oh yes, I didn't mention that it was Summer 2005. It was so humiliating. I'm walking like a ZOMBIE into the hotel, when my mom and I FINALLY get there. I've got gravel imbedded in my knees and palms. I'm shaking, because I'm so scared and hurting so freaking bad.

AND, I think my best scar is my surgery scar, from the thyroid cancer. That's a huge mother effer (haha); the scar is from ear to ear!

I went cow tipping when I was 12 and ended up getting chased by a very unhappy bull. I slid on my stomach under a barbed wire fence trying to get away and one of the barbs got my back. It crossed another scar so I have a little x scar on my lower back.

I got hit by a car when I was in the fifth grade and I ended up sliding down the pavement on my back getting huge road burns (like rug burns only much worse.) The doctor told my dad that if we weren't vigilant in cleaning out the wounds as they were healing and getting all the asphalt out of it I would end up with a big black tattoo like scar on my back. My dad was as vigilant as he could be, but I'm sure my crying while he was washing it at home was really hard. The long and the short of it is that I now have a tiny spot on my back that's still a black scar. At least I didn't break any bones!

When I was about nine or ten I was at a church class activity. We were playing some a chasing game in a forest. I was being chased. I tripped and fell. I rolled over and there was all this blood coming out of my lower left leg next to my shin bone and a small branch sticking out of the spot where the blood was coming from.

I do not remember crying but I do remember my teacher wrapping my leg with his red handkerchief then helping me hike back down the trail to the parking lot. I did not get taken to the hospital,I was taken home. I remember soaking my leg in a large bucket filled with some sort of antiseptic.

I have a one and a quarter inch scar in the spot. Oddly I don't remember the part when they took the branch out of the wound.

I don't have a great scar story, mostly because my scars are from things like chicken pox at the age of 10 or not remembering where my thumb was when slicing veggies with a Cutco knife. But I had to say I too was obsessed with Robin Hood: Prince of Theives for the exact same reasons. And I feel the same way about those reasons now as Nemesis does.

Wow. These are some great stories, I must say. So far it's the one about the 5-inch tummy slash over the fence that had me weak at the knees. But no sharks yet!

Coolmom:

Unfortunately, I didn't make up the part about blaming someone else. Keep in mind the whole thing happened when I was three and a half (3 1/2) or four (4) years old. My brother Chewy, the responsible party, was five (5) and convinced me we better tell my parents it was the neighbor kid.

Since that lesson I learned a lot about responsibility and since adulthood I have never (to my knowledge) denied responsibility for my actions. I don't like my embarassing foibles made public, but I surely would much rather admit to them than deny them and be proven wrong.

Just got a life lesson didn'tcha?

I have many scars from childhood and a few from adulthood too (one happened when i went to see you Nemesis last year - don't know if you remember!) But the first one that comes to mind was when I was on holiday in Holland.

I went swimming with my mum and after we went into the showers. They were showers where the water comes out of the ceiling - so I started singing 'I'm singing in the rain' in a big voice but ... i slipped over and fell flat on my face! My front teeth went through my bottom lip and broke. I cried my eyes out whilst my mum laughed her head off! I still have a small scar just under my bottom lip.

I have a scar on the very tip of my chin from falling UPstairs when I was little. Awesome.

I have another scar on the first joint of my middle finger on my left hand. It is in the shape of an upside down bird footprint and I have no idea how I got it. Strange

My most interesting scar comes from getting an appendectomy in Uruguay. After two pregnancies, it is truly Frankensteinish (let's just say the rest of your skin might recover from stretch marks, but apparently, scar tissue doesn't).

At least no one except my husband will see it (although I did worry about it a lot before I got married).

Oh man. In the absence of sharks, I have to declare victory to Banana, because her story darn near made me pass out. And it made me sad for her. I hope your mum eventually stopped laughing long enough to get you to the hospital for stitches!
