Good Enough--It's the new Perfect!
One blog I enjoy reading is French Press Knits, written by the girl who created the pattern for those amazing felted slippers that I made and then bragged about. We were pregnant at the same time and she had her (adorable) baby a week before I had mine.
Only, I think she might possibly have super powers, since she seems to have spent the time since the birth of her child whipping up these tiny, precious knitted things for her baby to wear. I have not done as well with the knitting. None of Voldy's projects are finished. The one thing I did complete (remember the hat?) I misplaced during the move so he never got to wear it. This was awesome of me. My mom, at my urging, brought me the yarn to make something for her that should be very simple and easy and fast. In 3 weeks I've gotten as far as the gauge swatch and that's it. It taunts me from where it lives on the living room floor, next to the couch. I don't know how this woman does it. It's not like I even have a difficult baby, but the most I can generally get done in a day is a shower. Possibly with a teeth-brushing if I remember.
I decided, though, that it was time to do a photoshoot, unfinished objects be darned. (Heh. Darned. Just realized what I did there.) So I grabbed the baby sweater I made for my nephew Hudson (now on loan from same) and stuffed my little guy into it. It's kind of a belly shirt on him and his 11-pound-ness, but he still looked precious.
Except I didn't time it well, and as soon as I got out the camera he started fussing. Which is why the sequence of photos goes like this:
Cranky face
Face with Pacifier in it
Pacifier Face with Drooping Lids
Asleep
But behold--still precious and darling. In something I knitted. So there you have it.

He is precious and darling and perfect! Enjoy being a momma.
Oh, Steph. He's so beautiful. I'm still crying that I missed my shot at holding that boy.
And seriously. Feel free to drop the goals. The things to accomplish. Dump them all.
By Maren I would sit there in my spit up covered pjs rocking and rocking long after the feeding and changing were done, while my house and even my other kids feel apart around me. Cause I know now that this part doesn't last. For better and for worse, he will grow up and this part will be over.
Seasons. There's one for everything and the newborn season and the knitting season may very well NOT be the same one! You know?
I meant "fell apart." Not feel apart. And lets please note that I did meet the basic needs of all three, but I dropped all the non-essentials. Like wearing both pants AND a shirt. Optional if you're two.
As long as you don't start watching Oprah, I won't judge you too much.
IlovehimIlovehimIlovehim!
I felt that way about Deb at SmittenKitchen. She was cooking away and baking these insanely yummy looking creations when her son was a newborn. When my son was born, I thought "What kind of voodoo magic did she have going on?" because there was no baking. No cooking. I was just trying to perform basic necessary functions.
I know exactly how you feel. Heck, even though my youngest is now 16 months I still consider it a pretty good day if I get a shower--getting the teeth brushed, extra bonus.
Eventually you will get back to some sort of normal type living. A type of living where you get to shower and brush your teeth...but maybe not your hair. And you will get to knit again. In the meantime, I suggest not reading blogs of people that have superhuman powers. Doing so will only make you feel dissatisfied with your current situation. Though I understand that this is hard, I have a real problem with this myself.
Right now is the time to take care of your baby and yourself and just enjoy this precious newborn time. It goes by fast.
Yep...it goes by too fast. He is adorable, Steph!
He's so cute!
The last month of your life has been more eventful than my five pregnancies put together. Give yourself a break. And hold that baby every minute while he's still small enough to hold! You waited 31years for him! I waited 54 and only got three weeks.
It's been nearly 21 years since I had a newborn and I don't see how Melynda does it either. I am sure she is a very fast knitter, and she has probably figured out how to knit while nursing or something. I'm with you. I was lucky to get a shower during the first three months with my first one.
Enjoy the tiny Dark Lord. You will have many years to knit.
So sweet! The knitting can wait--just cuddle that baby! It goes so fast!
SO precious and darling!
Well he LOOKS perfect, so I think you are doing just fine.
And, also, thank you for not being super mom all crafting with a newborn. It's called normal (either that, or I am a loser).
